Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Attack not resulting in death. The subcategory selected is- Attacked for supporting/being part of perceived Hindu party/org or working for Hindu community. In several cases, Hindus are attacked specifically or tangentially for their association with parties or organisations perceived to be pro-Hindu and/or for working in favour of the Hindu community. One of the classic cases was the attack against a Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha (BJYM) worker Praveen Nettaru. Nettaru was attacked and hacked to death for his association with Hindu organizations and his work for the Hindu community. He was murdered by PFI, a terror organization which aimed to commit a genocide of Hindus, target Hindu leaders specifically and turn India into an Islamic Nation. In such cases, it is possible that the immediate trigger for the violence is non-religious – either according to the perpetrator or the police. However, there are surrounding circumstances from which the conclusion can be reached that the victim was attacked for his association with a Hindu organization. In a similar case, Rinku Sharma was attacked by radicals. He was a member of Bajrang Dal and regularly worked for the Hindu community. While the police cited a different non-religious trigger for the attack, it is true that he was associated to a Hindu organization and the family of Rinku Sharma specifically attributed his gruesome murder to him working for Bajrang Dal and raising Jai Shree Ram slogans. Such cases are intrinsically driven by religious hate and would therefore be documented as a hate crime under this category. The other subcategory selected is- Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save victim. In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. This case exemplifies a religiously motivated hate crime against a Hindu man because Pavithran, the victim, was arrested solely for advocating Hindu rights and opposing the anti-Hindu policies of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government in Tamil Nadu. His YouTube channel, Hindu News, consistently highlighted Hindu causes such as temple protections and community welfare alongside appreciation for Tamil culture and pro-India national interests, amassing a dedicated following among Hindu viewers. The Tamil Nadu police targeted him on 5 March 2026 over this activism, swiftly detaining him without broader evidence of violence, which reveals deep-seated religious animosity towards Hindus and marks it as a targeted attack on an individual for his faith-based advocacy. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government in Tamil Nadu has a documented history of anti-Hindu policies, including public attacks on Hindu scriptures like the Vedas, denigration of revered temples and deities such as Lord Ram, and explicit calls for the annihilation of Hinduism. Multiple instances of such hostility have been recorded by the Hinduphobia Tracker, from obstructing traditional Hindu rituals like Karthigai Deepam to institutional bias against Hindu practices, including denying permissions for yatras and hymns while favouring other faiths. For instance, in August 2025, in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, a Christian Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam functionary named Ramesh unleashed vicious, inflammatory comments against the Hindu community, calling Hindus "sons of prostitutes". Likewise, on 16 January 2024, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Uma Ilakkiya made derogatory remarks targeting Lord Ram and the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya. A video of her abusing Lord Ram went viral on social media. In 2023, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam politician and Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of Chief Minister MK Stalin, equated Hinduism to dengue and malaria, demanding its annihilation. He declared, "Sanatana is like malaria and dengue, and so it must be eradicated, not opposed." In January 2026, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government in Tamil Nadu blocked the Hindu Karthigai Deepam ritual at the Deepathoon stone lamp pillar on Thiruparankundram Hill, while permitting the Santhanakoodu festival at the adjoining Sikandar Badusha Dargah in Madurai. On 23 February 2026, under Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam rule, thousands of Hindu devotees of Lord Murugan across Tamil Nadu were barred from reciting Kandha Sashti Kavasam, a sacred hymn to Lord Murugan, at temples statewide during the auspicious Sashti and Krithigai observances. Several devotees were detained, forcibly removed from temple premises, and made to pray on public roads. In January 2026, under Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam rule, Tamil Nadu authorities denied permission for a Rath Yatra procession linked to the Kerala Kumbh Mela-Mahamagam Mahotsav. On 19 January 2026, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government refused to allow the event. The fact that Pavithran opposed these anti-Hindu policies underscores how his arrest constitutes a direct attack on a Hindu youth for defending his community against systemic erosion. By targeting him for speaking up against Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s anti-Hindu elements through videos critiquing temple obstructions and deity insults and supporting fellow Hindus, the authorities showcased institutional prejudice. Such suppression of Hindus who stand against anti-Hindu forces demonstrates profound religious animosity, confirming this as a religiously motivated hate crime. Pavithran was booked under charges of religious extremism and communal incitement solely for opposing the DMK government's anti-Hindu policies and advocating for Hindu causes and rights. This punitive action against mere advocacy for Hindu interests, without evidence of violence or direct incitement, reveals the DMK government's deep-seated prejudice and hostility towards the Hindu community and its defenders. By equating peaceful Hindu rights advocacy with extremism, the state not only stifles legitimate dissent but weaponises legal mechanisms to target and silence Hindu voices, underscoring a clear pattern of religiously driven persecution. Given that this case meets multiple parameters of a religiously motivated offence, it has been added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
