Why it is Hate Crime ?
The primary category for this case is "Hate speech against Hindus". The sub-category for this case is "Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith". Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. This case stood as a clear instance of religiously motivated hate speech because the accused deliberately made derogatory and abusive remarks against Hindu deities in a video and uploaded it on social media. The act was not confined to a private setting but was recorded and disseminated across platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, ensuring that the content reached a wide audience. The deliberate nature of recording and sharing such material demonstrated a clear intent to publicly express contempt for Hindu religious beliefs and to provoke outrage among members of the Hindu community. Hindu deities occupy a central and sacred place within Hinduism, representing deeply held spiritual, cultural, and moral values that guide the lives of devotees through rituals, festivals, and daily worship. Any derogatory remarks directed at these revered figures, therefore, went beyond mere offence and constituted a direct attack on the religious identity and emotional fabric of the Hindu community. The circulation of such content, especially when amplified through social media, intensified its impact by exposing a large number of individuals to material designed to insult their faith and provoke communal disharmony. The use of multiple social media identities to circulate the video further underscored the deliberate and calculated nature of the act. By ensuring the content went viral, the accused maximised its reach and potential to hurt Hindu religious sentiments, transforming it from an isolated instance of offensive speech into a broader act intended to foster hostility and disrespect towards Hindu beliefs. Social media, in this context, functioned as a force multiplier, enabling rapid dissemination and magnifying the psychological and emotional harm caused to the community. In recent times, social media has increasingly become a platform for anti-Hindu hate, with derogatory memes, videos, and messages targeting Hindu religious symbols, practices, and deities. Such content is recognised as part of a broader pattern of Hinduphobia and religious hate crimes online. This deliberate targeting of revered religious icons firmly establishes this act as a religiously motivated hate crime; therefore, it is being categorised under the hate crime database. Furthermore, the accused used the name Sahil Ambedkar on Facebook, which indicates the accused was an Ambedkarite. The accused's identity as an Ambedkarite sharpened the religious dimension of this crime beyond doubt. Ambedkarism, cloaked as a movement for Dalit rights, had a long history of assaulting Hinduism through relentless attacks on its gods, goddesses, scriptures, Brahmins, upper-caste Hindus, and even pro-Hindu Dalits who refused to join the fray. Ambedkarites had desecrated temples, incited violence against Hindus for their faith alone, and sought to dismantle Hindu unity under the guise of social justice. The Hinduphobia Tracker has previously documented several instances of Ambedkarites denigrating and maligning Hindus and the Hindu community, driven by their ideological hostility. For example, in March 2026, Hindus were targeted with derogatory remarks by an Indian politician named Sunil Astay, an Ambedkarite and member of the anti-Hindu organisation Bhim Army. He raised violent slogans targeting "Manuvadis" (Hindus) at a public gathering, employing rhetoric that invoked violence and humiliation. In October 2025, violent rape and murder threats were issued to Hindu Brahmin women on social media by an Ambedkarite. The accused specifically targeted Hindu Brahmin women with these threats and celebrated the brutal gang rape and murder of Girija Tickoo, a Kashmiri Pandit woman. Similarly, in October 2025, an Ambedkarite woman made an anti-Hindu social media post targeting the Brahmin community, denying the genocide of Kashmiri Pandits, and mocking the film The Kerala Story, a movie portraying religiously motivated hate crimes committed against Hindu women in interfaith relationships by Muslim men. In October 2025, the Hindu community received violent threats from an Ambedkarite named Prakash Chandra Gautam. The Ambedkarite leader stated that if his government came to power, he would kill Kanwariyas, Hindu devotees who participate in the Kanwar Yatra, a sacred Hindu pilgrimage.
