Hindu gau-rakshak violently assaulted by group of Muslim men for his active efforts in preventing cow slaughter
Case Summary
In Chikhli town of Buldhana district, Maharashtra, a Hindu man named Omraje Madanraje Gaikwad was violently assaulted by a group of Muslim men because of active efforts in preventing cow slaughter in the area. According to reports, the victim, Omraje Madanraje Gaikwad, was a Gau rakshak (cow protector) who was actively involved in efforts to prevent cow slaughter in the area for the past three years. The incident occurred on 21 February 2026 at approximately 5:45 p.m. While he was returning home, he was intercepted by a group of Muslim men identified as Asman Khan, Aqeel Khan, Farzan Khan, and Anis Khan, who confronted him over his activities as a gau rakshak. During the confrontation, they verbally taunted him about his Hindu identity and his role in stopping cow slaughter. They demanded, "Have you become a cow protector? What do you say about Hindus?" Subsequently, they brutally assaulted him with kicks and punches and issued threats to kill him. The hostility stemmed from his earlier involvement in assisting the police in seizing two containers of beef and in helping shut down illegal cow slaughter units in the locality in coordination with Police Inspector Sangram Patil. Subsequently, after a new police inspector reportedly permitted three to four slaughter units to resume operations, tensions escalated in the area. Despite five written complaints being submitted in connection with threats and intimidation faced by him, only a non-cognisable complaint was registered. He further stated that the police inspector warned Gau Rakshaks against staging protests over the reopening of slaughter units. Following the attack, Gaikwad managed to take shelter in a nearby shop, preventing more grievous harm. He was later admitted for medical treatment, and the police registered a case against the named accused while maintaining vigilance in the town to prevent further unrest.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Attack not resulting in death. The selected subcategory is: Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save a victim. In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. This incident constituted a clear case of religiously motivated targeting, as a Hindu cow protection activist was subjected to a violent assault by a group of Muslim men, for his sustained efforts to prevent cow slaughter. The attack occurred in the backdrop of his active involvement in assisting authorities in seizing beef consignments and shutting down illegal slaughter units, activities closely tied to deeply held Hindu religious beliefs regarding the sanctity of the cow. In Hinduism, the cow is revered as Gau Mata, a living emblem of motherhood, compassion, and non-violence. It embodies purity and the sanctity of life, and its protection ranks as an act of profound religious devotion and service to dharma (righteous duty). Harming a person for defending this sacred being transcends physical aggression; it assaults the freedom to practise the Hindu faith and live by its teachings. The attack on this gau rakshak (cow protector) embodied deliberate religious hostility against the values and beliefs he upheld In this context, targeting an individual for engaging in cow protection, particularly through threats invoking his Hindu identity and taunts about his role as a gau rakshak, moved the incident beyond a routine altercation and into the realm of hostility directed at the religious values he represented, as the confrontation was intertwined not simply with personal animosity but with explicit objections to his faith-based activism. The victim, Omraje Madanraje Gaikwad, had been active for several years in efforts to curb illegal cow slaughter in the locality. His role in facilitating the seizure of beef containers and in supporting police action against unlawful slaughter operations had generated animosity among the members of the Muslim community. For years, he worked to halt the trafficking of cows, driven by deep religious conviction and moral duty. On the day of the incident, he was intercepted and assaulted precisely for this reason, as he sought to stop acts striking at Hinduism's heart. This violence was directed not at a personal adversary but at a Hindu man openly protecting his faith, with the nature and intensity of the assault underscoring its ideological and religious dimension. While some may interpret the assault as retaliation linked purely to the disruption of illegal trade, the verbal references to his status as a cow protector and to his Hindu identity during the attack reflected a dimension that extended beyond economic grievance. The violence was directed at an individual visibly associated with a religious cause, thereby reinforcing perceptions within the local Hindu community that the attack symbolised opposition to their faith-based practices. The attack formed part of a wider, alarming pattern of anti-Hindu violence targeting gau rakshaks. The Hinduphobia Tracker recorded multiple such cases. For example, on 6 June 2025 in Mandideep, Madhya Pradesh, Dalit Hindu gau rakshak Ajay Malviya suffered a brutal beating by a Muslim mob of over 500 after he and fellow Hindu activists intercepted Muslim cow smugglers transporting cattle illegally. Another case unfolded on 21 January 2025 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, where Hindu gau rakshak Manoj Baria faced an attack by five Muslim men, identified as Hussain, Waseem, and Mubeen, near Rupali Cinema in the Karanj police station area. Manoj, with a friend, endured assault with sharp weapons and sticks from masked assailants bent on silencing his cow protection activism. Given the repeated threats, explicit religious motive, and targeted violence against a Hindu protecting his faith, this case met the criteria of a religiously motivated hate crime. In line with prior documented incidents of attacks against gau rakshaks, this case has been added to the Hinduphobia Tracker's hate crime database as clear anti-Hindu violence fuelled by deep-seated religious animosity.
