Case Summary

In Devru village, Sonipat, Haryana, a Hindu man named Rajendra was brutally killed by a group of Muslim men over a minor altercation. According to reports, the incident occurred on the night of 15th October 2025. The deceased victim, Rajendra, was an e-rickshaw driver. While passing by a liquor shop in Devru village, carrying passengers on his e-rickshaw, four Muslim assailants surrounded and attacked him with sharp weapons. The attackers stabbed Rajendra multiple times in the stomach and back, leaving him critically injured, while the terrified passengers fled the scene. Following this, Rajendra's family immediately rushed him to the Civil Hospital, where he was referred to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak, due to his critical condition. He died during treatment on 16th October 2025. Rajendra’s wife, Pallavi, was pregnant. She was traumatised by the brutal murder of her husband. Pallavi stated that Rajendra's murderers belonged to the Muslim community. Reports confirmed that the Muslim accused had a minor dispute with Rajendra on the morning of 15th October 2025. The same dispute escalated later in the evening, leading to Rajendra’s murder. On the complaint of Rajendra’s brother, Rakesh, a case was registered against the perpetrators, Irshad, a resident of Devru village, and his Muslim associates. The police station in charge stated that the accused were being searched vigorously and they would be arrested. The police began investigating the matter.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Attack resulting in death. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Communal Clash/ Attack. Communal clash is a form of collective violence that involves clashes between groups belonging to different religious identities. For a communal clash between Hindus and non-Hindus to qualify as a religiously motivated hate crime, the trigger of the violence itself would have to be anti-Hindu in essence. For example, if there is a Hindu religious procession that comes under attack from a non-Hindu mob, and after the initial attack, Hindus retaliate in self-defence, leading to a communal clash between the two religious communities. While at a later stage, both communities are involved in the clash/violence, the initial trigger of the violence was by the non-Hindu mob against the Hindus and therefore, it could safely be termed as an anti-Hindu violence. Further, the trigger would also have to be religiously motivated. In the cited example, the attack by the non-Hindu mob was against a religious procession and therefore, can be concluded to be religiously motivated. In some cases, the trigger may be non-religious, however, it develops into religious violence against Hindus at a later stage. In such cases too, the foundational animosity towards Hindus becomes the motivating factor of the crime and therefore, it would be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime against Hindus. Under this category, cases where the attack led to the death of the Hindu victim/s would be documented. In this case, although the initial trigger for the crime is not religiously motivated and appears to have stemmed from a personal dispute between the accused and the deceased Hindu victim, the disproportionate and brutal reaction of the Muslim accused exposes a deeper communal intent. The accused, along with all his accomplices, tracked down and mercilessly murdered Rajendra with extreme brutality, stabbing him multiple times with sharp weapons. Such excessive violence, wholly out of proportion to the minor altercation that preceded it, reveals more than just rage or personal enmity; it reflects a targeted act born of religious animosity. The manner in which the victim, a Hindu man, was singled out and killed with such cruelty demonstrates that this was not a spontaneous outburst, but a deliberate act charged with religious hatred. The very nature of the assault, its intensity, the repeated stabbing, and the group’s unified participation point to the presence of communal undertones and a religiously motivated intent behind the killing. In such cases, even when the immediate trigger for the attack may not appear to be religious, the sheer disproportion and ferocity of the assailants’ actions make it clear that the victim was targeted because of his Hindu identity, underscoring the communal nature of the crime. In many cases across India, Hindu victims have been targeted, assaulted, or killed by Muslim perpetrators purely because of their religious identity. In numerous incidents, the initial conflict may not originate from a direct religious motive; it may begin as a personal dispute, a business misunderstanding, or an everyday altercation. However, as the situation escalates, the violence inflicted often reveals deeper communal hostility against the Hindu victim. This transformation of a personal disagreement into a brutal, religiously charged assault reflects the communal mindset that provokes such attacks. The Devru, Sonipat, case aligns with this pattern. Even though the immediate reason for the attack may not have been explicitly religious, the extreme violence and the involvement of multiple Muslim assailants in killing a single Hindu man clearly exhibit a communal character. It showcases how hatred rooted in religious prejudice can turn an ordinary dispute into a targeted act of violence against a Hindu individual, thereby establishing this case as a hate crime driven by religious animosity. Notably, the Hinduphobia Tracker has previously documented numerous instances where non-religious triggers sparked communal violence against Hindus by Muslims. For example, on 3rd September 2025, in Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu man named Rajkumar was brutally stabbed to death by three Muslim men, Aslam, Shamsul alias Shulla, and Irshad alias Bandar, following a minor financial dispute. Rajkumar’s friend Tinku was also grievously injured in the attack. The incident heightened religious tensions in the area. On 30th May 2025, in Dewran Garhiya village, Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, a minor verbal altercation between two Hindu men and a Muslim man escalated into a violent assault by a large Muslim mob, inflaming communal tensions. In another incident on 7th July 2025 in Bhavna Nagar, Raipur, Chhattisgarh, a Hindu family was brutally attacked by a Muslim mob of nearly 80 people following a simple dispute over garbage disposal. Victims suffered severe injuries from sharp weapons. Similarly, on 22nd June 2025 in Ghongade Basti, Solapur, Maharashtra, a minor road dispute led to a targeted communal assault on Hindus by a large Muslim mob, sparking widespread clashes. Given that this particular incident meets the parameters of a hate crime, and considering the previous instances of such communal attacks, this case has been added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
