Case Summary

In the Kali Bazaar area under Bamutia in the West Tripura district, in Tripura, the idols of goddess Durga were desecrated by unidentified miscreants. According to media reports, the miscreants broke into the studio of the idol maker Tapan Sarkar late on the night of 12th September 2025 and demolished three idols of Goddess Durga. Artisan Tapan Sarkar stated that he had last seen the idols intact at midnight, but when he returned around 5 AM, he found them vandalised. Sarkar, who had been in the trade for several years, said he had never experienced such an incident before and never expected it, as he had no enmity with anyone. He estimated the financial loss at around ₹2.5 lakh but stressed that the greater concern was the limited time left—only about 15 days before Durga Puja—within which the idols would now have to be reconstructed. Following a complaint from Tapan, a police team from Bamutia outpost, led by Sub-Inspector Anthony Jamatia, rushed to the spot and launched an investigation to identify those responsible. Local leader Sibendra Das condemned the act, stating that it had hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus and triggered outrage in the locality. He added that the incident was also an attack on the livelihood of idol maker Tapan Sarkar and would directly affect the upcoming Puja celebrations of families and clubs that had placed orders for the idols. Notably, this was not an isolated incident of idol vandalism in Tripura. The Hinduphobia Tracker had previously reported multiple such cases from Tripura. For example, on 2nd July 2025, in the Tatuatilla locality of Udaipur in the Gomati district, a Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Shitala was vandalised by a Muslim mob, and the temple idol was desecrated. Similarly, on 6th September 2024, an idol of Goddess Kali was found beheaded in Katraibari village in Tripura’s Ranirbazar area, sparking communal tension. The desecration of the 30-year-old temple led to unrest, and by nightfall, unidentified individuals set fire to houses and vehicles. Nine houses were set ablaze, four to five homes were vandalised, and over eleven vehicles were destroyed. Several people sustained injuries. Again, on 15th October 2024, communal clashes erupted in the Pekucherra area of North Tripura after unidentified miscreants vandalised a Shiva temple. This further heightened tensions between Hindus and Muslims.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Attack on Hindu religious representations. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Desecration of Hindu religious symbols. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. This incident was a clear case of a hate crime against Hindus because the perpetrators deliberately targeted and desecrated the idols of Goddess Durga. Hindu idols are deeply sacred and are worshipped daily by devotees as part of rituals that hold profound religious significance in Hinduism. The deliberate act of breaking and desecrating these idols was not random vandalism, but a calculated assault on the Hindu faith and the Hindu community. Such an act showcases deep-seated animosity towards Hindu beliefs and constitutes a religiously motivated crime designed to humiliate and injure the sentiments of Hindus. The timing of this crime further exposed its malicious intent. The desecration occurred just ahead of Durga Puja, one of the most revered and widely celebrated festivals among Hindus. Durga Puja commemorates the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura, symbolising the triumph of good over evil, and is held with great devotion and preparation by millions of Hindus. By targeting and desecrating idols of Goddess Durga shortly before this holy festival, the perpetrators sought to disrupt religious celebrations, create distress in the Hindu community, and display their hostility. Such timing was not coincidental but represented a deliberate attempt to hurt Hindu religious practices and sentiments during their most sacred period. Reports and records by Hinduphobia Tracker highlight that this was not the first such incident in Tripura. Previous cases of temple vandalism and idol desecration in the state demonstrate that this is not an isolated occurrence but part of a recurring pattern where Hindu temples and deities have been deliberately targeted. Such actions reveal entrenched religious hostility towards Hindus and their faith. They are not mere acts of destruction of property, but direct assaults on the Hindu religion, its practices, and its followers, making them a sustained pattern of hate crimes rooted in communal animosity. In this case, even though the perpetrators are unknown, the act was still motivated by religious animosity towards Hinduism and the Hindu community. Therefore, it is being added to the hate crime database in the Hinduphobia Tracker.
