Shiva Temple vandalised by unknown miscreants in Tripura
Case Summary
On October 15, communal clashes erupted in the Pekucherra area of North Tripura after unidentified miscreants vandalized a Shiva temple late on Monday night, October 14. Outraged by the incident, members of the Hindu community protested and attempted to target an under-construction structure within a mosque complex in retaliation. Police intervened, preventing further escalation. In response to the tension, the Tripura state government suspended internet services across North Tripura for 72 hours and imposed movement restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, effective until Thursday noon. Dr. Pradeep Kumar Chakravarty, Secretary to the Government of Tripura’s Home Department, issued a notification under Section 52 of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, prohibiting SMS, mobile internet, and press messages across the district.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the prime category- Attack on Hindu religious symbols. Under this, the sub-category selected is- Attack on Temples. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, despite understanding that Hindu temples are centres of worship and sanctity, the miscreants vandalised a temple in the Pekucherra area of North Tripura. The intent behind the action could only possibly be that of desecrating a place of worship of the Hindus and showing disrespect towards their faith. Here, it is important to mention that though the last update was that the miscreants were unknown, regardless, the action stemmed out of hatred against Hinduism and resulted in the desecration of the sacred temple and would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime.
