Case Summary

In Yavat, Daund, Maharashtra, a Muslim man named Syed made objectionable remarks targeting Hindus on social media, leading to widespread communal tension. His posts on WhatsApp and Facebook included derogatory comments referencing a rape case involving a Hindu priest (pujari) in Madhya Pradesh, which he used as a pretext to insult the entire Hindu community. This provocation sparked unrest in the region. Deeply hurt by the remarks, some Hindu locals responded with anger, which escalated into communal clashes. The situation follows an earlier incident involving Syed’s son, Amit alias Ameen, who had desecrated the murti of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj inside the Neelkantheshwar Mahadev temple on 26 July 2025. He had entered the temple premises and broken the murti into pieces, causing deep outrage among local Hindus. The Hinduphobia Tracker has already documented the incident involving the desecration of the murti of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj by Amit alias Ameen at the Neelkantheshwar Mahadev temple. In response, a bandh (strike) was observed on 1 August 2025 in Yavat and Daund taluka to protest the desecration. On 31 July, BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar, MLA Sangram Jagtap, and other local leaders addressed gatherings in Yavat village, expressing solidarity with the Hindu community and condemning the acts of desecration and online abuse. Following these developments, both Syed and his son were arrested by the police—one for desecrating the sacred murti of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the other for spreading anti-Hindu hate on social media. During his visit to Pune, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that the objectionable post was uploaded by a youth from outside the region, which had provoked anger among local residents. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar also visited the area and stated that the youth responsible for the post was a daily wage labourer from Nanded, who had used an incident from Madhya Pradesh. Police forces were deployed in the region to restore peace, and the authorities urged the public to maintain law and order and not fall prey to rumours.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added under two primary categories. The primary category selected is- Hate Speech against Hindus. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. In this case, the Muslim accused, Syed, deliberately targeted the Hindu community through derogatory posts on WhatsApp and Facebook that mocked and denigrated the Hindu faith. By referring to a criminal incident involving an individual Hindu priest to malign the entire Hindu community, he used the incident as a tool to insult, stereotype, and degrade Hindus collectively. This constitutes hate speech, as the language was not limited to criticism of an individual but was clearly aimed at vilifying the Hindu religion and its followers as a group. The mocking tone and sweeping generalisations are rooted in religious animosity and implicit hatred, aiming to provoke, humiliate, and incite anger against Hindus. Such speech not only fosters communal hostility but also reinforces existing prejudices and stereotypes that have historically been used to dehumanise and persecute Hindus. This targeted speech, therefore, qualifies as a religiously motivated hate crime, as it attacks Hindus solely on the basis of their faith and identity. Since this case is a stark example of a religiously motivated hate crime targeting the Hindu community and its cherished heritage, it is being added to the hate crime database.
