Case Summary

In Ramol, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, a 21-year-old Hindu woman was repeatedly harassed by a Muslim youth identified as Armaan Malik. He lived directly opposite her house in Jai Ambe Co-operative Housing Society. The harassment continued for around 15–20 days and included obscene gestures, whistling and singing at her, spitting near or on her feet, spraying water towards her, and deliberately bringing his motorcycle dangerously close to her while she was walking. The woman initially remained silent about the harassment but later broke down and informed her family. Her mother said that Malik regularly watched the woman in an objectionable manner and troubled her whenever she came outside. The family also said that he had behaved similarly with other young women in the locality. The Hindu family then approached the Muslim woman who owned the house where Malik was staying and asked her to intervene. Instead of removing him or stopping the harassment, she threatened the family and said that she would continue keeping the youths in the house regardless of their objections. She further threatened that the Hindu family itself could be driven out if necessary. The matter escalated when the family went to Ramol Police Station to lodge a complaint. While they were inside the police station, another Muslim man who had accompanied Malik threatened the Hindu woman’s family in front of police personnel, saying that they would be chopped into pieces. The threat further intensified the family’s fear and anger over how the matter was being handled. After the incident, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal activists gathered at Ramol Police Station, demanding action in the harassment case and questioning how the complaint was being handled. Videos showed a large crowd outside the police station chanting religious slogans, while a confrontation and pushing also took place between some activists and police personnel inside the station premises. Senior police officers intervened to control the situation. More than 60 VHP and Bajrang Dal activists were subsequently detained or picked up by police after tensions increased at the station. Police confirmed that the woman’s complaint concerned obscene gestures and spitting by Armaan Malik, while the wider confrontation at the police station developed after Hindu activists arrived demanding action in the case.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The harassment of the Hindu woman in Ramol raises concerns that extend beyond the initial acts of obscene gestures, spitting and intimidation. The accused harassed her repeatedly, while the woman’s family faced threats after attempting to intervene. The landlord’s alleged warning that the Hindu family could be driven out, followed by a threat to chop the family into pieces at the police station, adds a troubling dimension to the incident. These threats raise the question of whether the family was simply being intimidated over the complaint or whether religious hostility also played a role. There is precedent for cases from Gujarat itself in which harassment of Hindu women and families has occurred alongside explicit hostility towards Hindu identity. In Kalana village in Ahmedabad district, Hindu residents reported prolonged harassment of women and threats against children for wearing tilaks, alongside restrictions on Hindu festivals. In Navsari, Hindu residents faced threats to leave their locality, accompanied by anti-Hindu slurs and violence. These cases demonstrate why threats against a Hindu family, particularly threats involving expulsion from a locality, warrant scrutiny for a possible religious dimension rather than being viewed only as isolated personal disputes. In the Ramol case, the alleged threat to drive the family out is particularly significant. When a family approaches others to stop the harassment of a young woman and is met with threats rather than a resolution, the response can become a means of intimidating the family into silence. The fact that the accused and those who allegedly threatened the family were Muslim, while the woman and her family were Hindu, adds context that merits examination. However, religious identities alone cannot establish religious motivation, and the available account does not establish that the accused harassed the woman because she was Hindu. Nor does it establish that the threats were intended to drive the family out specifically because of its religious identity. The distinction is important. The conduct described is serious, and the threats against the family should not be minimised. The precedents in Gujarat show that similar forms of harassment and intimidation have, in other cases, been accompanied by explicit anti-Hindu hostility. But those cases alone cannot prove the motive in Ramol. The possibility of religious targeting remains a legitimate concern, particularly in light of the alleged threat to drive the Hindu family out, but the evidence currently available does not conclusively establish that religious prejudice motivated the harassment or threats. The case is therefore classified as Undecided, pending clearer evidence that the family was targeted because of its Hindu identity. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records incidents based on the date they occurred or when the victim’s ordeal began, not when they were reported or published. In this case, the available material could not conclusively establish the exact date the harassment began. Therefore, 6th October 2026, the date the media reported the incident, has been recorded as the indicative incident date for documentation purposes only.
