Hindu man's cows stolen and slaughtered; Muslim accused arrested

Case Summary
In Prayagraj’s Attarsuiya area, police arrested Jamal Mustafa after recovering two stolen cows and a bucket of blood clots from his residence. His two brothers, also involved in the crime, are currently absconding. The case began when three cows went missing from Khuldabad, belonging to Subhash Yadav. Upon investigation, two cows were found at Mustafa’s residence, while the remains of the third were discovered nearby. As news of the cow slaughter spread, enraged locals gathered outside the accused’s house, demanding strict action. VHP and Bajrang Dal workers later surrounded the police station, intensifying pressure on authorities. To pacify the protesters, an FIR was registered, and Mustafa was taken into custody. In response to negligence in handling the case, two police personnel, Inspector Liaquat Ali and Constable Shahnawaz, were suspended. The role of three other officers, including Ranimandi police post in-charge Anish Fatima, is under investigation. The search for the absconding accused continues.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorised as Undecided. If more details emerge, it will be added to the Hate Crime Database.
