Hindu woman gangraped in Meerut by Muslim men on Eid

Case Summary
A Hindu woman was gangraped by four Muslim men. According to the victim, two of the accused, whom she knew, lured her to a mango orchard under false pretences, where two other accomplices were already present. The four men then overpowered her and gangraped her. The woman tried to resist, but they beat her and subjected her to extreme violence. Hearing her cries for help, nearby villagers rushed to the scene and informed the police. Law enforcement officers arrived promptly and, with the assistance of the locals, arrested all four suspects. The accused were identified as Sartaj from Sardhana, while Saddam, Maruf, and Mushahid were residents of Muzaffarnagar. Reports suggested that they had come to the village for Eid celebrations and committed the crime during their visit. Following the victim’s complaint, the police registered a case and took the accused into custody. Superintendent of Police (Rural) Rakesh Kumar stated that an official complaint had been filed and assured that strict action would be taken against the perpetrators. He confirmed that a thorough investigation was underway to ensure justice for the victim. The case caused outrage in the region, with demands for swift legal proceedings against the accused.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
There is a strong suspicion in this case that the woman was targeted because of her religious identity. It has often been seen that Muslim perpetrators target Hindu women owing to intrinsic animosity towards Hindus, specifically Hindu women. However, this case has been included in the 'undecided' database as further verification is required to establish the motive behind the crime. While the perpetrators and the victim belonged to different religious backgrounds, there is no conclusive evidence at this stage to confirm that the attack was driven by religious hatred or that the victim was targeted specifically because of her faith. Moreover, given the timing of the crime on the Muslim festival of Eid and the possibility of a pattern in similar incidents, further investigation is necessary to determine whether the victim was deliberately chosen based on her religious identity. If evidence emerges indicating religious profiling or bias, the case may be reclassified as a hate crime. Until then, it remains under review to ensure a thorough and impartial assessment of all facts.
