Case Summary

A case emerged in Munger, where a Muslim man deceived his Hindu wife after a year of marriage, fleeing with her money and jewellery. The woman was found unconscious by the roadside and was admitted to Sadar Hospital by the police for treatment. On March 24, 2025 (Monday) night at around 8:00 PM, police from Kotwali police station discovered a 30-year-old woman lying unconscious near Neelam Chowk amidst a crowd. She was immediately rushed to Sadar Hospital for medical attention. Upon regaining consciousness, the woman informed the police that she had married Mukesh Yadav from Farda 12 years ago, but they divorced. Following her father's death and the presence of a stepmother, she felt distressed. A year ago, she became acquainted with Mohammad Irfan from Mahmadpur and started living with him in a rented house at Ambe Chowk. In recent days, Irfan had been reluctant to stay with her, and disputes arose between them. Ten days ago, he abandoned her at home and disappeared. She grew increasingly anxious. Then, on the evening of March 24, 2025, Irfan called her and asked her to meet him at Neelam Chowk, instructing her to bring all her clothes and money as they would be leaving. As soon as the woman reached Neelam Chowk with ₹50,000 in cash and a gold chain, Irfan snatched them from her and fled. She chased after him but collapsed at Neelam Chowk, unconscious. Local residents alerted Dial 112, and the police team arrived, that took her to Munger Sadar Hospital for treatment. The woman stated that after divorcing her first husband, she had been living with Irfan for the past year. However, he had now absconded with all her money and jewellery, leaving her with no support.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case presents complexities that make it difficult to definitively categorise it as a religiously motivated hate crime, despite strong suspicions that the victim was profiled based on her Hindu identity. While the modus operandi aligns with a broader pattern of deception, exploitation, and abandonment of Hindu women by Muslim men—often linked to predatory proselytisation—there is no concrete evidence in this particular instance to confirm that religious conversion or targeting based on faith was the primary intent. The victim’s vulnerability, stemming from her divorce and strained family ties, may have made her an easy target for exploitation. The fact that Mohammad Irfan gained her trust, lived with her for a year, and then suddenly disappeared—only to later lure her with false promises and flee with her money and jewellery—suggests that his primary objective might have been financial gain rather than religious coercion. However, given the pattern observed in similar cases, it cannot be ruled out that her Hindu identity played a role in her being targeted. The absence of explicit evidence pointing to religious conversion, forced proselytisation, or direct religiously motivated harm places this case in the "undecided" category. While the circumstances raise legitimate concerns about a pattern of exploitation against Hindu women, the lack of verifiable proof of religious intent prevents it from being conclusively classified as a religious hate crime. If additional evidence emerges indicating a religious angle—such as previous instances of targeting Hindu women, attempts at conversion, or ties to networks engaging in predatory proselytisation—the case could be reclassified accordingly. Until then, it remains in the "undecided" category due to the ambiguity surrounding the perpetrator’s exact intent.
