Case Summary

In the Dhaulana police district of Hapur, a 16-year-old Hindu girl was abducted and raped bytwo Muslim men. The victim was lured and drugged by a man named Nadeem while visiting a local shop, then taken to a secluded location where the assault occurred. Several hours later, she regained consciousness and, in a traumatised state, informed her family of the ordeal. This incident caused local unrest, with Hindu organisations and activists demanding immediate and rigorous legal action against the accused. The police responded by registering a case against two individuals, including Nadeem, and successfully apprehended one suspect. At the time of writing this report, police were actively pursuing the second suspect, conducting raids on the residences of his known associates. The victim had been sent for a medical examination, and the investigation was ongoing. Recognising the sensitivity of the situation, given the communal aspect, authorities deployed a substantial police presence in the area to maintain peace and prevent any escalation of tensions. The Commanding Officer confirmed that the police had received a report concerning the gang rape of a minor girl by individuals from a different community. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the victim had prior acquaintance with the primary suspect. A First Information Report (FIR) was promptly filed, and the named accused was taken into custody. The search for the second suspect continued.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, a minor Hindu girl was drugged, abducted and subsequently raped by a Muslim man named Aqeel. This could potentially be a crime motivated by religious profiling, as it has been observed that in many cases, Muslim perpetrators target Hindu women and minor girls due to inherent animosity towards Hindus. Hindu women and girls are very vulnerable to crimes like rape and sexual assault at the hands of Muslim men. However, it is also possible that the crime was one of opportunity, where the Hindu girl was simply accessible to the Muslim perpetrator. Meanwhile, it could also be argued that for a Muslim perpetrator, a Muslim girl would likely be more accessible than a Hindu girl. The fact that the perpetrator specifically targeted the Hindu girl could suggest religious profiling of the victim. Nevertheless, this remains speculative, as the case details provide no clear indication of religious motivations. Furthermore, neither the victim nor her family made any statements suggesting a religious motive behind the crime. For this reason, this case has been added to the 'Undecided' database. If further information emerges that hints towards a religious motivation behind this crime, then it would be reclassified and included under the Hate Crime database.
