Case Summary

In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu girl was reportedly missing. According to her family, she was lured, converted to Islam, and married to a Muslim man named Hasrat. The family accused him of enticing her into a love trap, converting her to Islam, and then marrying her. They further alleged that Hasrat tried to sell their daughter. According to media reports, the Hindu girl worked at a clothing shop in Matiyari, Lucknow. She went missing after leaving home on 26th February 2025. The family continued searching for her, and in the meantime, the girl claimed she could only come home once a month. However, when she did not show up even for Holi, the family grew concerned. On 11th March, the family was stunned to see their daughter’s photo with a young man wearing a mask on Instagram. Upon further investigation, the family traced her to Khairabad in Sitapur, where they found her at the house of a Muslim man named Hasrat. According to the victim's family, Hasrat and his family prevented them from meeting their daughter and threatened to kill them if they spoke out. The victim's father expressed concerns that his daughter’s life was in danger, fearing she might be sold. Alarmed by the situation, the family filed a complaint with the local police station against the accused. The police registered a case against Hasrat and his brother under relevant sections of the law. Speaking to the media, City Kotwal Amit Pratap Singh confirmed that a case had been registered against Hasrat and his brother, and investigations were underway.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, Hinduphobia Tracker acquired the FIR filed by the father of the Hindu woman. In the FIR, it is mentioned that the woman is 20 years old - an adult. Further details reveal that the woman herself told her parents that she was working in another shop and would not return home more than once a week. Now, it is likely that as the parents say, the girl was lured into a relationship only to be forcefully converted, married and then potentially trafficked. However, it is also possible that the girl eloped with the Muslim man our of her own free will. Given that the woman is an adult (20 years old) she has agency to make the decision to not only maintain a relationship and marry, but also change her religion. Given the lack of statement from the woman herself or any other evidence substantiating that the woman was lured and converted against her will, this case is being added to the undecided database. If more information emerges, this case will be added to the Hinduphobia tracker database.
