Hindu woman tricked into marriage by Muslim man using fake Hindu identity
Case Summary
In Dehradun, Uttarakhand, a Hindu woman was deceived and coerced into marriage by a Muslim man named Nadeem, who posed as a Hindu under the name Naveen. Nadeem was already married and the father of four children. Despite this, he concealed his true identity and married the Hindu woman in a temple. Nadeem forged documents and adopted the false identity of Naveen to mislead the woman. Believing him to be a fellow Hindu, she entered into a relationship with him. He later proposed marriage, which she accepted. Nadeem then arranged a simple ceremony at the Chandrabani Gautamkund Temple, where the marriage took place. Two women witnesses were Sulakshana and Ritika. Ritika was paid ₹10,000 to serve as a witness. A marriage certificate was issued by the Shri Ganga Uddhar Seva Samiti. Inspector of Patel Nagar, Pradeep Rana, confirmed that a case had been registered based on a complaint submitted by Bhanwar Singh Pundir, the state in-charge of the Hindu Raksha Dal. Rana reported that Nadeem had used forged documents and bribed the witnesses to carry out the deception and secure the marriage.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. The subcategory selected is- Man pretends to be Hindu, with the tertiary categories being: - Name changed and Marries as per Hindu rituals. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. This incident qualifies as a hate crime due to the clear presence of religiously motivated targeting, deception, and abuse. The perpetrator deliberately concealed his religious identity to initiate and sustain a relationship with a Hindu woman. This itself is a clear manifestation of bias and malicious intent towards the victim's religion. By concealing his true identity, he exploited her trust, targeting her under false pretences. This indicates a premeditated intent to manipulate her based on her religious background. In cases like these, the tactic of adopting a false Hindu identity to manipulate and "ensnare" a Hindu individual is not just an act of personal betrayal but can also be interpreted as an expression of disdain or disregard for Hinduism and its customs that reflects a deeper animosity towards Hindus and their beliefs. This incident qualifies as a hate crime due to the clear presence of religiously motivated targeting, deception, and abuse. The perpetrator deliberately concealed his religious identity to initiate and sustain a relationship with a Hindu woman. By posing as a Hindu and adopting the name Naveen, he exploited her trust and targeted her under false pretences. This deception reflects not just personal betrayal but a calculated attempt to manipulate the victim based on her religious background. The marriage was solemnised in a Hindu temple and conducted as per Hindu rituals, further deepening the extent of the deceit. This was not incidental—it involved deliberate impersonation, forged documents, and paid witnesses to fabricate legitimacy. Exploiting sacred Hindu rituals to give credibility to a false identity demonstrates not only manipulation but also a violation of religious sanctity. Such tactics—using a fake Hindu identity to "ensnare" Hindu women—are more than isolated acts of fraud; they reflect a pattern of targeting individuals from a particular religious background with premeditated intent. This conduct expresses a deeper animosity towards Hinduism and its customs, showing disregard for the faith and its followers. Therefore, this incident must be recognised as a religiously motivated hate crime. Disclaimer: It is important to clarify that the report does not specify the exact date when the woman’s ordeal began. Therefore, for documentation purposes, we have recorded the date based on when the incident was reported in the media.
