Case Summary

In Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar, two brothers, 21-year-old Arjit and 17-year-old Harshit, were brutally attacked in broad daylight after celebrating Holi. The incident occurred around 3:15 PM, when the brothers were escorting a relative to the metro station. As they stepped outside their street, a group of 10-12 boys suddenly surrounded them, dragging them out and launching a violent assault. Arjit suffered a severe head injury, while Harshit sustained a fractured hand. Despite having no known enmity with anyone, the two were ambushed, beaten, and pelted with large stones. When bystanders attempted to intervene, they were threatened with a knife. Eyewitnesses stated that if the brothers had not managed to escape, they could have been killed. Harshit remains deeply traumatised, unable to sleep, while their parents are left questioning why their sons were targeted. The boys' father, upon hearing of the attack at 4 PM, immediately approached the police. However, after receiving no immediate response, he personally reviewed CCTV footage for four hours, ultimately identifying one of the assailants. The accused admitted to being part of the mob and confirmed that a knife was present during the assault. Despite the severity of the incident, no arrests have been made, and the family is still waiting for an FIR. Locals, shocked by the brutality, have urged authorities to take swift action to ensure such an attack does not recur. Many also criticised onlookers who filmed the incident rather than intervening. The case has raised serious concerns about law and order in the area, with residents fearing the potential consequences of inaction.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been included in the 'undecided' database as further verification is needed to establish the motive behind the attack. While the brutal assault on Arjit and Harshit in Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar is deeply concerning, there is no conclusive evidence yet to confirm whether the attack was religiously motivated or a result of some other factors, such as personal rivalry or local disputes. The fact that the brothers were attacked immediately after celebrating Holi raises suspicions about a possible communal angle, as Holi is a Hindu festival, and there have been prior incidents of targeted violence against Hindus during their religious celebrations. However, without clear confirmation regarding the identity and motives of the attackers, it remains uncertain whether the victims were specifically targeted for their Hindu identity or if the assault stemmed from other reasons. Therefore, until further evidence emerges that can confirm the religious animosity angle, the case remains in the 'undecided' database. If more details emerge, it will be added to the hate crime database.
