Subsequently, the police were informed, and a case was registered against the Muslim man under sections 196, 298, 299, 331, and 335 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita (BNS). Following this, the Muslim man was arrested, and the stolen items were recovered. According to the police, the Muslim accused had a previous criminal background, involving attempted murder and property-related crimes. Hindu organisations expressed anger and concern about ongoing attacks on Hindu temples in Telangana. They stated that there had been multiple similar attacks focused exclusively on Hindu temples and questioned the Congress-led Telangana government and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy for failing to act on similar incidents in the past. The incident sparked widespread outrage among devotees, with calls for strict punishment and further investigation into the possible network behind the attack.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Attack on Hindu religious representations. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Desecration of Hindu religious symbols. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. The other subcategory selected is- Defiling of Religious customs. Sanatan Dharma is not a religion of one book, which is to say that while it has religious scriptures that form the central tenets of the faith, there are several traditions followed through thousands of years, mostly passed from generation to generation orally. There are several such customs and traditions that are followed by various Hindus and Hindu sects. Defiling of these traditions and customs is a breach of an individual or group’s religious practices. Such practices can range from dietary restrictions like not eating non-vegetarian food for a certain period of the year, not eating non-vegetarian food at all, not eating beef since the cow is considered holy in Hinduism, the sanctity of religious customs followed in the house (like many ISCKON devotees), etc. Any malicious action leading to the breach of such traditions or defilement of these traditions owing to animosity towards the faith or for the sake of activism stems not only from the lack of faith in the religion itself but also from disregard for the faith of the devotees who follow the customs/traditions and implicit bias against the faith, the tradition itself. Since these specific traditions are central to the faith of the devotees of that specific sect of Hindus, any non-compliance with these traditional rules would be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. The other subcategory selected is- Attack on Temples. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. This case has been added to the tracker as the Muslim perpetrator and his accomplices deliberately targeted a Hindu temple. He entered the temple premises with his footwear, trampled the Shivalinga, and stole all the valuables and sacred items from the Shivalayam. A temple is an institution that holds immense spiritual importance in the Hindu faith. For Hindus, Temples are not mere physical structures; they are sanctified spaces believed to embody the divine presence of Hindu deities. Taking shoes or slippers inside the sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha) of a Hindu temple is considered a grave act of desecration. When someone deliberately enters a temple with footwear and desecrates sacred items or idols, it cannot be dismissed as mere ignorance. It reflects intentional disrespect, communal provocation, and a targeted attack on Hindu religious identity. The perpetrator here not only desecrated temples by entering with his footwear, but he went a step further to walk over the Shivalinga with his footwear. This is not merely an act of disrespect but a calculated insult aimed at degrading a core religious symbol. This is akin to burning a holy book or defacing a religious idol, symbolic violence that deeply wounds the religious sentiments of the Hindu community. The deliberate desecration and profanation of core Hindu symbols, specifically the Shivalinga, is an act committed to provoke and hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus. The Muslim perpetrator's act of stamping on the Shivalinga is deeply offensive to Hindus. Shivalinga carries deep religious significance as it is a representation of Lord Shiva, a principal deity in Hinduism. Desecrating the Shivalinga by stepping on it is a direct insult to the deity and is an attack on the religious beliefs of Hindus. Following the desecration, the theft of sacred items, including idols and ritual objects like nagapadiga, kalasham, and shatagopam, further underscores the nature of the crime. These are not merely material valuables; they are imbued with spiritual significance and are essential to temple rituals. Stealing and removing these items from a temple is an act aimed at disrupting and degrading the mode of worship of the temple. Such acts do not occur in a vacuum. They echo a historical pattern of religious desecration, especially by Islamist aggressors, who have historically defiled temples, broken idols, and mocked Hindu worship. In Islamic theology, idol worship, referred to as Shirk, is regarded as the gravest sin. The Qur'an strictly condemns it, and Islamic teachings emphasise the complete rejection of any practice associated with idol worship. Muslims are taught from a young age that idolatry is an unforgivable sin. While this belief is central to Islamic faith, it has also led, historically and in contemporary times, to intolerance and hostility towards idol-worshipping religions, especially Hinduism. When individuals publicly mock Hindu deities, it reflects more than personal disrespect—it is often the manifestation of deep-seated theological contempt against Hindu practices, stemming from the Islamic doctrinal view that idol worship is impure and offensive. Such actions target the identity, beliefs, and dignity of Hindus. Desecration of deities is a deliberate attack on the religious sentiments of the Hindus that stem from the intrinsic animosity against the religion. This is why this incident warrants inclusion in the Hinduphobia Tracker. Notably, Hindu activists raised concerns about repeated attacks on Hindu temples in Telangana. This showcases that such attacks are not isolated incidents of violence and desecration; rather, they are premeditated attacks on Hindu temples. Such acts are a result of deep-rooted hostility and hatred for Hindus, their faith, and their sacred places of worship. Disclaimer: The media report does not specify the total number of accomplices involved with the Muslim perpetrator. Therefore, for the purpose of documentation, we have recorded the number of perpetrators as 1, referring solely to the Muslim perpetrator.
