Minor Hindu girl lured away by Muslim man in Aurangabad, Bihar
Case Summary
In Amba, Aurangabad district of Bihar, a minor Hindu girl was lured away by a Muslim man named Mohammad Jasim. The girl is a resident of Amba in Aurangabad district in Bihar, and the Muslim man is a resident of Garhwa in Jharkhand. Jasim worked as a borewell operator. He travelled to Amba for his work. He met the girl and lured her into a relationship. The two started meeting secretly. When the family of the girl got to know about their relationship, they arranged the marriage of the girl and also fixed the date of the wedding. When the minor came to know about this, she told Jasim about it. After this, Jasim and the girl met at Amba Bazar and both eloped from there. When the teenager did not return home till late at night, the family started searching for her. Meanwhile, the family received a photo on WhatsApp which showed the girl wearing sindoor and sitting next to Jasim. Disturbed by this, the family filed a police complaint. The police began investigating the matter and tracked the phones of Jasim and the girl. The police managed to track them down from Garhwa and managed to catch hold of them. They were planning to change the SIM cards so they could not be traced by the police or the girl's family. The police arrested Jasim and sent him to jail. Meanwhile, Julie was sent to the court to record her statement and was then handed over to her family. Hindu organisations supported the girl's family and demanded strict action against the accused.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, a minor Hindu girl was lured away by a Muslim man. This incident raises serious concerns regarding possible religious profiling of the victim, especially given the documented pattern of Muslim men targeting Hindu girls, particularly minors, due to deep-seated animosity towards the Hindu community. It is worth noting that if the Muslim perpetrator had simply sought a relationship, a Muslim girl might have been more accessible to him than a Hindu girl. The deliberate targeting of a Hindu girl strongly suggests that religious profiling could have played a part in the crime. However, it remains equally possible that this was a crime of opportunity, rather than a case of crime motivated by religious animosity. It is also crucial to highlight that the Hindu victim in this instance is a minor. Therefore, any supposed “consent” given by her holds no legal standing under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Minors lack the maturity and legal capacity to make adult decisions such as engaging in romantic relationships or eloping with an adult. However, as there is no conclusive evidence of a religious motive behind the crime, and the victim’s parents have not made any statements to that effect, this case is currently being placed in the Undecided database. If any further details emerge that demonstrate the crime to be religiously motivated, then it will be added to the Hate Crime. Disclaimer: It is important to clarify that the report does not specify the exact date when the girl's ordeal began. Therefore, for documentation purposes, we have recorded the date based on when the incident was reported in the media.
