Case Summary

In Varanasi, a minor Hindu girl was molested by a Muslim man named Bilal. The 11-year-old girl had gone out of her house to buy some household items. A short distance away, a Muslim man dragged and molested her. The girl caught hold of the molester, shouted, and called her father. The father and other Hindu locals from the colony caught the accused and started taking him to the police station. Meanwhile, a group of 20 Muslims blocked their way and attacked the Hindus with bricks and stones. They became very violent and managed to free the accused, taking him away with them. A Hindu man named Rahul Prajapati was seriously injured in the altercation and was taken to Kabirchaura Hospital for treatment. Upon receiving the information, DCP Gaurav Bansal, ACP Kotwali Pragya Pathak, and the Kotwali police station in-charge arrived at the location. The police identified the accused based on the victim’s complaint and registered a case against them. They managed to arrest 13 accused individuals.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the prime category of- Attack not resulting in death. Under this, the sub-category selected is- Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save the victim. In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. This case has been categorised under the above-mentioned category and sub-category as it involves a violent, targeted assault on Hindus who stood up against the molestation of a Hindu girl. The incident escalated when the victim's father and local Hindus attempted to take the accused, Bilal, to the police station, demonstrating their intent to seek justice through legal means. However, their actions were met with extreme hostility from a group of around 20 Muslim individuals, who launched a violent assault using bricks and stones to obstruct the arrest and free the accused. This retaliatory attack was not merely an attempt to rescue Bilal but was an act of aggression specifically targeting those who opposed the crime and sought justice for the Hindu girl. The mob's actions suggest an organized effort to protect the accused while intimidating and physically assaulting the Hindu locals. The brutal attack, which left a Hindu man, Rahul Prajapati, seriously injured, further underscores the intent behind this violence—punishing those who dared to resist and defend the victim. Such cases highlight a broader pattern where radicals resort to mob violence when their crimes are challenged, reinforcing a culture of fear and impunity.
