Case Summary

An anti-Hindu fake news story was spread on social media, insinuating that a Hindu man named Bhola Yadav, along with his accomplices, had killed a Muslim man, Sajid, for filing a case against Bhola for raping his wife. This assertion was proven false, as it emerged that Sajid's wife was the perpetrator, having killed her husband with the help of her friend. According to media reports, this occurred on the X (formerly Twitter) app where several Muslim and Left-wing X handles, such as @HateDetectors, @iamharunkhan, Advocate Rukhsana Syed alias @Umm_e_Meerann, and @Delhiite_, propagated fake news claiming Bhola Yadav killed Sajid in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri after being booked in a case of abduction and gang rape of Sajid's wife. They further disseminated their fraudulent narrative, presenting Sajid as a victim of a hate crime committed by Bhola Yadav due to his religious identity. However, the Mainpuri Police clarified that Sajid’s wife was responsible for orchestrating her husband’s murder and planned to implicate Bhola Yadav in the crime. The Mainpuri Police posted a video clarification on their official X handle regarding the incident, explaining that Sajid’s wife, together with her friend Sumit, masterminded and executed Sajid's murder, intending to falsely frame Bhola Yadav. The police confirmed the incident was not a hate crime but a personal conspiracy.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Hate Speech against Hindus. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Anti-Hindu subversion and prejudice. The tertiary category selected is- Anti-Hindu fake news or downplaying. Hate speech is defined as any speech, gesture, conduct, writing, or display that is prejudicial against a specific individual and/or group of people, which is leading to or may lead to violence, prejudicial action or hate against that individual and/or group. Media plays a specific and overarching reach in perpetuating prejudicial attitudes towards a community owing to unfair, untrue coverage and/or misrepresentation/misinterpretation, selective coverage and/or omission of facts of/pertaining to issues affecting a specific religious group. This type of bias can dehumanise the victim group, making it easier for others to justify harmful actions against them, which aligns with the objectives of hate speech laws aimed at preventing such harm. It is often observed that the media takes a prejudicial stand against the Hindu community driven by their need to shield the aggressor community which happens to be a numeric minority, however, is the one perpetrating violence against Hindus. For example, the media is often quick to contextualise religiously motivated crimes against Hindus, omit or misrepresent facts that point towards religiously motivated hate crimes, justify and/or downplay religiously motivated hate crimes or simply present fake news to stereotype Hindus. Such media bias leads to the denial of persecution and is often used to dehumanise Hindus, leading to justification for violence against them. For example, the media covered several fake allegations of Hindus targeting Muslims and forcing them to chant Jai Shree Ram. Most of these cases were proved false and fabricated after police investigation. These fake news reports were subsequently never retracted or clarified. Such fake news led to the justification of violence and dehumanisation of Hindus based on the argument that since Hindus targeted Muslims and forced them to chant Jai Shree Ram, the dehumanisation of Hindus and violence against them was par for the course and merely a retaliation. Such media bias leads to prejudicial portrayal of Hindus and offers a justification for violence against them and therefore, is considered hate speech under this category. This incident is a clear example of anti-Hindu fake news and hate speech, as multiple Muslim and Leftist social media accounts propagated, without any verification, that Sajid, a Muslim man, was murdered because of his Muslim identity. They attempted to frame Bhola Yadav, a Hindu man, as the perpetrator, even though he was actually innocent and became a victim of fake news. Such misinformation amplifies communal tension and unjustly casts Hindus as the aggressors in a fabricated hate crime scenario. This narrative does not simply target Bhola Yadav; it seeks to implicate the entire Hindu community, portraying them as habitual aggressors and perpetrators of violence against Muslims. These distorted and fake accusations denigrate Hindus and put them in a profoundly negative light, increasing their susceptibility to discrimination and violence. By circulating such content, Islamists and Leftists further social division, propagating animosity and fostering an environment hostile to Hindus within society. Such actions are motivated by animosity towards Hindus and their religion, making it a religiously motivated crime. Notably, Islamists and leftists have a documented tendency to spread fake news that constructs a false Muslim victimhood narrative, framing regular personal disputes or criminal acts as hate crimes against Muslims. In reality, the majority of these so-called communal incidents often emerge from personal, familial, or property disputes, not religious animosity. Nevertheless, these activists present such incidents as communal hate crimes, which highlights their intention to generate religious animosity towards Hindus. This pattern constitutes religiously motivated hate speech and, therefore, it is being added to the hate crime database.
