Two cow smugglers arrested, six bovines recovered

Case Summary
In Jashpur, Chhattisgarh, cows were being smuggled. The villagers informed the police and the police quickly acted upon it and arrested the two accused smugglers. They were identified as Dinesh Toppo and Laldev Uraav. The police freed six cows that were being smuggled. On the morning of 17th February 2025, near Silfiri Dam in Katabel village of Manora area, some people were beating cows and taking them towards Jharkhand. The local villagers witnessed this and informed the police about this. The police reached the spot and caught hold of the smugglers. SSP Shashi Mohan Singh registered a case against both the accused under the Chhattisgarh Farmer Animal Protection Act 2004 and the Prevention of Animal Cruelty Act 1960.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorised as Undecided.
