Missing Hindu girl's severed hand and jaw found days later, Muslim youth confesses to abduction and murder

Case Summary
In Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, 19-year-old Upasana, a Class XII Hindu student, went missing after leaving home for her board exams on February 10, 2025. Days later, partial human remains were discovered, leading to a police investigation that culminated in the arrest of Md Tauheed, who confessed to the crime. Upasana had attended her examination as scheduled but never returned home. Her father, Hridaynarayan, who was posted at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, filed a missing person’s complaint before leaving for duty. However, despite search efforts, there was no trace of his daughter for several days. On February 19, residents of Lahru village made a horrifying discovery when they noticed a stray dog carrying a human hand in its jaws. The villagers immediately alerted the police. Upon arrival, law enforcement officials found a girl’s school bag, an identity card, a human jaw, and a severed hand at the site. Forensic teams were called in to examine the remains, but the rest of the body is still unaccounted for. On February 21, during a routine patrol, police officers encountered Md Tauheed, who attempted to flee and opened fire in an effort to evade arrest. In response, the police shot him in the leg before successfully capturing him. A pistol and cartridges were recovered from his possession. During interrogation, he confessed to abducting and murdering Upasana before hiding her body in the forest. He claimed to have been in love with Upasana and became jealous after seeing her WhatsApp status with a Hindu boy named Pradeep. On the day of the crime, Tauheed lured Upasana to a secluded jungle, where he killed her and concealed her body, before fleeing the crime scene.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
Based on the available information, this case appears to involve a one-sided obsession, where the Muslim accused was pursuing the Hindu woman, attempting to entrap her in a relationship, and ultimately killing her out of jealousy upon seeing her picture with another boy. While such crimes are often influenced by underlying religious resentment or animosity, there is currently no clear evidence to confirm a religious motive in this instance. Therefore, the case is being categorised as 'undecided.' If further information emerges substantiating a religious motive, it will be included in the hate crime database.
