Case Summary

In Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, four Muslim smugglers had a confrontation with the police. During this, in the retaliatory action of the police, one of the smugglers was shot in the leg and injured, while his three companions managed to escape. The police began looking for them. The complaint against the cow smuggling was made by the Pradhan of the Pakkhanpur village. In his complaint, he said that on 10th February, thieves stole three cattle. After this, on the night of 12th February, thieves once again stole two cattle from the cowshed. On the complaint of the Pradhan, the police registered a case and started an investigation. The police received information about a gang stealing cows. On this, police station in-charge Vandana Agrahari, along with her team, laid a siege near Brahma Sthan forest. On seeing the police, the cow smugglers started firing. In the retaliatory action of the police, one smuggler got injured by a bullet in his leg while his three companions fled. The smuggler who was shot in his leg was identified as Dilshad, while his three companions who fled were identified as Parvez, Tabrez, and Danish. Dilshad was the leader of their gang. The police stated that all four smugglers would be booked under the Gangster Act.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorised as Undecided. If more details emerge, it would be added to the Hate Crime Database.
