Case Summary

In Narayanpur village, located in the Jaspur area of Udham Singh Nagar district, Uttarakhand, a Muslim mob attacked a wedding celebration over DJ music. The mob entered the wedding tent, vandalised the DJ equipment, and attacked the wedding guests. They also threatened the Hindus with death if they did not refrain from playing the music. An FIR was registered against 11 known individuals and 20 unidentified persons based on a complaint by Chhatrapal Singh, the bride's father. Three accused—Suleman alias Nanhe, son of Mubarik Hussain alias Murari; Nawazish, son of Mohammad Nabi; and Shehzad, son of Azad—were arrested. Authorities seized two wooden sticks and bricks used in the incident. The incident occurred when a DJ played music for the wedding procession of Chhatrapal Singh's daughter, whose groom's party had arrived from Manpur, Thakurdwara. Simultaneously, namaz (Islamic prayer) was being conducted at a nearby mosque. Suddenly, some members of the Muslim community came from the mosque and forcefully made their way into the wedding tent. They insisted that the Hindus stop playing the music claiming that they were getting disturbed while performing namaz inside the mosque. When the Hindus did not listen, the Muslims launched an attack on them. Police were alerted and intervened, using mild force to disperse the crowd and restore peace.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the prime category of- Attack not resulting in death. Under this, the first sub-category selected is- Attacked for Hindu identity. In several cases, Hindus are attacked merely for their Hindu identity without any perceived provocation. A classic example of this category of religiously motivated hate crime is a murder in 2016. 7 ISIS terrorists were convicted for shooting a school principal in Kanpur because they got ‘triggered’ seeing the Kalava on his wrist and tilak that he had put. In this, the Hindu victim had offered no provocation except for his Hindu religious identity. The motivation for the murder was purely religious, driven by religious supremacy. Such cases where Hindus are targeted merely for their religious identity would be documented as a hate crime under this category. The second sub-category selected is- Attacked for crossing 'Muslim area'. One of the reasons that Hindus get attacked unprovoked specifically by Islamists is for crossing ‘Muslim areas’. Essentially, Muslim mobs often attack Hindus crossing or present in certain areas which have a majority Muslim population. It has often been cited as one of the reasons to blame Hindus for attacks against themselves, signalling that Hindus displaying religious symbols, taking our religious processions or crossing any area which is dominated by Muslim residents is a provocation in and of itself. These areas are mostly ghettoized areas where mobs mobilize quickly to attack Hindus for a variety of reasons like playing music during a religious procession, crossing a mosque, wearing a tilak or any other religious symbol in a Muslim-dominated area, praying at a local temple in that area etc. There have been cases where the few local Hindus of that area have been attacked on their way to the Temple for prayers as well, simply because the area is considered a Muslim-dominated area. Several times, it is entirely possible that the immediate trigger for the violence against Hindus was non-religious in nature, however, the violence became religiously motivated in nature because the area was Muslim dominated and the residents on the whole harboured animosity towards Hindus, evidenced from the actions of the mob, the slogans, and the nature of the attack. Such crimes are motivated by the religious identity of the victims and are therefore classified as hate crimes under this category. This incident in Narayanpur village, Jaspur, where a Hindu wedding procession was attacked by a Muslim mob, bears clear markers of a religiously motivated hate crime. The attack was instigated by the presence of a DJ playing music during a wedding celebration, which coincided with namaz in a nearby mosque. However, the fact that namaz was taking place inside the mosque while the DJ was being played inside the wedding tent. This makes it evident that the attack was not about noise disturbance but about asserting dominance over Hindu religious and cultural practices. The Muslim mob had no valid reason to interfere with a private Hindu wedding ceremony, yet they chose to violently disrupt it, vandalise property, and assault the attendees. This shows that the real motive was not about maintaining religious sanctity but about targeting Hindus to express their cultural and religious identity. The pretext of namaz was merely an excuse to unleash religiously motivated violence. Such incidents follow a pattern where any Hindu religious or celebratory activity near a Muslim area is met with hostility, coercion, and often violent suppression. The deliberate targeting of Hindus in their own private space underscores the deep-rooted religious intolerance behind the attack, making it a clear case of a hate crime against Hindus. Consequently, this case has been added to the Hinduphobia tracker.
