Hindu girl abducted and sexually abused for 10 months by Muslim man; accused knew he was HIV-positive yet he targeted six other girls

Case Summary
Ahmedabad police have arrested a Muslim man, Abdul Mubeen Hamid Khan Pathan, for abducting and sexually exploiting a Hindu girl. The accused, who is HIV-positive, kidnapped the victim in March 2024 and held her captive for 10 months, repeatedly assaulting her at various locations. The girl went missing on March 22, 2024, after attending a wedding in Shahibaug. Despite months of investigation, the police were unable to trace her, leading to the case being transferred to the Ahmedabad Crime Branch’s Human Trafficking Unit. Meanwhile, the victim’s family approached the Gujarat High Court for justice. In February 2025, authorities tracked the accused and the victim to Bijori, Madhya Pradesh, where Abdul had confined the girl and deprived her of food. He had moved her across multiple cities, including Surat, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Beed, Hyderabad, and Bilaspur, reportedly following advice from a lawyer, who is now also under investigation. The police rescued the girl and arrested Abdul, who had been evading capture by frequently relocating. The police stated that the accused was aware that he was HIV-positive, yet he had targeted six other girls in the past. The police are now trying to locate all of them, and once found, they will undergo medical examinations.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, there is a strong possibility that the Muslim perpetrator deliberately targeted his victims based on their religious identity. Given the established pattern of religiously motivated crimes where Hindu women and minors have been targeted, it is reasonable to suspect that the accused may have profiled his victims in a similar manner. However, since there is currently no clear confirmation regarding the religious identities of the six other victims, it would be premature to definitively categorise this as a hate crime based on religious profiling.
