Case Summary

A Hindu minor girl from a village in Ghazipur’s Karanda police station area was abducted by a Muslim man, Aaqib Khan, who runs a local studio. The incident occurred on January 11, 2025, when the girl, along with her younger sister, was on her way to school. Aaqib called the sisters to his shop and took the elder sister away on his bike. The younger sister informed their family about the incident upon returning home. When the girl’s father approached Aaqib’s family seeking information, he was threatened by Aaqib’s stepmother. She reportedly claimed they would convert the girl to Islam and marry her to Aaqib, adding that the family could do nothing to stop them. The victim's father, fearing for his daughter’s safety, filed a police complaint against Aaqib, his stepmother, his brother Arif Khan, and his aunt. He expressed concern that the family might exploit or sell his daughter under the pretence of marriage. Police registered a case under relevant sections and launched a search operation to locate the girl. Raids were being conducted at various locations to recover her and take appropriate action against the accused.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the category of- Predatory proselytisation and within this, the sub-category selected is- Harassment, threats, coercion for conversion. Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats, in this case, find their root on discriminatory grounds which has the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion, forceful circumcision etc. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment to ensure the Hindu victim abandons his/her professed religion and adopts the religion of the perpetrator. In this subcategory, we would only include cases where the victim was harassed, threatened or coerced to convert. Cases where attempts were made to convert but the victim resisted would be documented in another sub-category. Such cases where Hindu victims are harassed to convert to the perpetrator’s religion are rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. In this case, the Hindu minor girl was abducted and held in confinement, which constitutes a severe form of intimidation. The family of the accused then threatened to convert her to Islam and marry her to the accused. The harassment was intended to coerce the victim into abandoning her faith and embracing Islam. The underlying motivation of such predatory proselytisation reflects animosity toward the victim's professed faith. This case involved harassment and coercion aimed at forcibly converting the Hindu girl, with the primary objective being to strip her of her religious identity. Given that the central motivation behind this act is rooted in religion, it has been classified as a hate crime.
