Ayodhya’s Hanumangarhi Mahant Raju Das reveals mafia Atiq Ahmed converted his aides to Islam; had converted 12 people to
Case Summary
On April 28, 2023, the Chief Priest of Ayodhya’s Hanumangarhi Temple said that Umesh Pal murder accused ‘Bumbaaz’ Guddu Muslim was originally a Hindu named Ayush Chaudhary and was converted to Islam by slain mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed. Mahant Raju Das also said that Atiq Ahmed used to convert Hindu youths to Islam and then incite them to carry out criminal activities at his command. "12 people were converted by Atiq Ahmed. Guddu’s name was Ayush Chaudhary, and Usman was Vijay Kumar", he said. Mahant Raju Das thus claimed that along with smuggling weapons in collusion with Pakistan’s ISI, smuggling counterfeit currency, loot, murder, and rape, Atiq Ahmed used to play the game of religious conversion. Notably, Atiq Ahmed was shot while he was in custody. Ahmad was sentenced to imprisonment for life in the kidnapping of Umesh Pal in 2006. Besides, 102 cases were filed against Atiq Ahmed, including those of threats, murder attempts, and kidnapping. The gangster act was brought against him a total of three times. It is important to highlight here that, despite the fact that Atiq Ahmed never faced the charge of illegal conversion, the case status against him in this specific instance has been maintained as held guilty by the court. Notably, since he passed away while incarcerated, he will never be prosecuted for this specific crime. Nonetheless, we have maintained the case status in this instance as—perpetrator held guilty by court—because he had already been convicted for other offences and was in jail prior to his death.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
Religious brainwashing essentially means the often subtle and forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up their religious beliefs to accept contrasting regimented ideas. Religious brainwashing also involves propaganda and manipulation. It involves the systematic effort, driven by religious malice and indoctrination, to persuade “non-believers’ to accept allegiance, command, or doctrine to and of a contrasting faith. Cases of such brainwashing are far more nuanced than direct threats, coercion, inducement and violence. In such cases, it is often seen that there is repeated, subtle and continual manipulation of the victim to induce disaffection towards their own faith and acceptance of the contrasting faith of the perpetrator. While subtle indoctrination is widely acknowledged as predatory, an element which is often understated in such conversions or the attempts of such conversion is the role of loyalty and trust which might develop between the perpetrator and the victim. Fiduciary relationships are often abused to affect such religious conversion. For example, an educator transmitting religious doctrine of a competing faith to a Hindu student. The Hindu student is likely to accept what the teacher is transmitting owing to existence of the fiduciary relationship. The exploitation of the fiduciary relationship to religiously indoctrinated victims would also be included in this category. Since the underlying animosity towards the victim’s faith forms the basis of predatory proselytization, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. This particular case has been classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under the core category of Predatory Proselytisation because there is a distinct component in this case, which essentially involves brainwashing non-Muslims to abandon their faith and begin practising the alien faith. This demonstrates the perpetrator's bias against the Hindu faith and his deliberate attempt to alienate the victims from their Hindu identity.
