Case Summary
A retired sanitation worker identified as Latif Khan was urinating on the small temples built at Ujjain’s Ramghat. A devotee from Delhi who was walking with his family on the banks of Ramghat saw Khan urinating at the temples. When they stopped him from doing so, he did not agree. After this, with the help of some people, they caught him and later handed him over to the Mahakal police station. He was booked under section 295A of the IPC and presented before a court. Then he was sent to jail.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. The fact that the Muslim man in this instance urinated on Hindu shrines highlights the Islamists' ingrained animosity against Hinduism, which serves as the catalyst for these kinds of horrific acts. This instance has been added to the tracker under the following category since disrespect for the Hindu religion is the primary purpose behind this incident.
