Two Muslim youths pretend to be Hindus to trap two Hindu girls, create fake Aadhaar cards
Case Summary
From the Indore district of Madhya Pradesh, the Police booked two persons identified as Irfan and Rehman for concealing their religious identity, introducing themselves as Prem and Kuldeep and taking two Hindu girls to a hotel at 12 AM. The accused boys created fake Aadhaar cards and took the girls to a hotel named 'Saffron'. They also created fake documents for the girls to hide their original identity, showing that they belonged to Rajasthan and had come to Madhya Pradesh for a few days. However, the hotel manager caught the accused duo after he spotted differences in the photographs. He then checked the mobile phone of the accused and learnt that their original names are Irfan and Rehman. The manager informed Hindu organisations and the Police, who took cognisance of the event and interrogated the girls. The girls, however, stated that they knew the boys through social media and thought they were Hindus. The Police then booked the accused under relevant sections of the law.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, Muslim men concealed their religious identity and pretended to be Hindus to lure Hindu women. Since the religious motive of the crime is evident from the fact that the men pretended to be Hindus to trap Hindu women, this case has been documented as a hate crime.
