Muslim man pretends to be Hindu, pretends to convert to Hinduism to marry the victim in a temple, later takes her to his village and converts her to Islam to undergo Nikah

Case Summary
Roshan Ali, a resident of the Rampur district of Hardoi, was living in Delhi and selling flowers for a living when he met a Hindu woman, who was a resident of Tilak Nagar. Gradually, the duo fell in love and decided to get married. He introduced himself as Roshan Lal to the girl’s family members. When the family came to know that he actually belonged to the Muslim community, they disapproved of the marriage. Roshan volunteered to quit Islam and embrace Hinduism to marry the Hindu woman. He went to the Arya Samaj Mandir in Delhi and converted to Hinduism, identifying himself as Roshan Lal. With the consent of the girl’s family members, he then tied the knot with the Hindu woman in the same temple. After two months, on July 5, 2023, the accused took the Hindu woman to his village in Hardoi. There he converted her to Islam and married her again as per Islamic rituals. As word of the incident spread, some Bajrang Dal members were contacted by the local villagers, who then went to the Hardoi police and filed a complaint against the man. Roshan Ali claimed that the Hindu woman was converted and named Roshni to keep both families happy. When questioned, the woman expressed her desire to continue living with Roshan Ali.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, there are all the makings of a religiously motivated hate crime since there is a misrepresentation of faith by the Muslim perpetrator, the pretence of converting to Hinduism to ensure he can marry the Hindu woman and then converting the Hindu woman to Islam. There is a strong suspicion that the woman was brainwashed to accept this brainwashing or she was coerced/threatened. However, since the woman said she wanted to continue living with the accused, the facts of the case point towards the fact that the woman may have converted to Islam willingly. Since the woman herself said she wanted to continue living with the accused, this case is being categorised as 'undecided'. If more details emerge, it would be added to the hate crime database.
