Muslim man abducts Hindu girl and converts her to Islam. The accused had previously converted and married four Hindu women and then abandoned them.

Case Summary
From Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district, a resident of Adampur named Rashid, who is already married to five women, abducted a sixth 19-year-old Hindu girl from the same village. Four out of his five wives are Hindu and only one is a Muslim, demonstrating that he deliberately seeks out Hindu females for conversion before abandoning them to seek out another one. Notably, Muslim men are allowed to take up to four spouses as per Islamic law. The girl had spent the previous three months at the house of her maternal uncle in the Chhaprauli police station’s Sanauli Nagla area. She disappeared from there under suspicious circumstances. It was later discovered that she had been abducted by the Muslim man. He converted her to Islam and married her according to Islamic rituals. The distressed family had filed a missing person’s report. Upon figuring out that a complaint has been lodged, Rashid’s family members Parvez, Nadeem, Shahzad and Naushad barged into the victim’s home and threatened them to abduct their second daughter as well if Rashid's name was not immediately removed from the FIR. Local Hindu activists were then alerted. They gathered at the police station and launched a protest, presenting a memorandum demanding the return of the girl by June 22, 2023. Parvez and Shahzad were arrested in connection with the case. Further investigation is underway.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
One distinct element in this particular case, that is the accused forced the victim to convert to Islam before marriage and forcefully performed Nikah, demonstrates that the Muslim perpetrator committed the crime while harbouring a bias against the Hindu faith. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. The relationship in such cases is mostly consensual and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. In such cases, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Niqah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing.
