Muslim youth and his brother pose as Hindus, wear Kalavas to trap two Hindu sisters, then sexually exploit them
Case Summary
Two Muslim brothers from Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, disguised themselves as Hindus to trap two real Hindu sisters. The accused brother duo tied Kalava, bad-mouthed Muslims, and even took the sisters to watch ‘The Kerala Story’. Salik worked as a junior advocate in the Dehradun court for a year. Meanwhile, his younger brother is pursuing an MBBS in Bangladesh. The accused was taken into custody by the police after they filed a case against him. The police called his younger brother, who was in Bangladesh, for questioning. In Bijnor, their father is reportedly employed as an assistant government advocate. The victim girl said in her complaint that she became friends with a man named Lucky Rana on Instagram seven months prior. Under the guise of getting married, Salik, alias Lucky, had multiple sexual encounters with the girl throughout this time. Meanwhile, the accused's younger brother made friends with the younger sister and likewise changed his name to a Hindu one. He clicked intimate photos and videos of the younger sister. Salik also introduced the Hindu girl and her relatives to his parents with fake Hindu names. Following that, the date of their engagement was set for October 4, 2023, with the approval of both families. "Lucky" also mortgaged the jewellery of the girl in a finance company and kept one lakh rupees with himself. The truth was exposed when Salik rented a flat in the Panditwadi area and paid the landlord the advance rent through online payment, which displayed his name as Mohammad Salik. He, however, presented an identity card in the name of Dinesh Rana’s son Lucky Rana which made the landlord suspicious. He informed the Cantt Police Station and the police called Lucky for questioning. Police recovered two Aadhar cards in the possession of the accused with the same address and Aadhar number but different names.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, the Muslim youths hid their religious identity and posed as Hindus to trap Hindu women. The fact that they concealed their religion and donned Hindu religious symbols points towards the fact that they wanted to specifically target the victims because of their religious identities as Hindus making it a case of religiously motivated hate crime.
