A Maulana traps married Hindu woman in a relationship, converts her to Islam and gets her raped by male relatives

Case Summary
From Moradabad district of UP, a Maulana identified as Nijamuddin trapped an already-married Hindu woman in a relationship. He then converted her religion to Islam and forced her to satisfy the physical needs of his other male relatives. The victim woman is said to have met the accused in the year 2016 after which Nijamuddin expressed his love for her. He then established sexual relations with her and impregnated her. Later, he forced the woman into marriage and also converted her religion to Islam. The woman also confessed that she was raped by the other relatives of her husband and threatened with death if she refused. The accused is said to have harassed multiple women in the past. He had also recorded derogatory videos of the victim and was threatening to make them viral if did not listen to him. While the police have arrested Nijamuddin, the search for his relatives, including his three brothers and two other relatives, is on.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
There are distinct elements in this particular case demonstrate that the Muslim perpetrator committed the crime while harbouring a bias against the Hindu faith. The first factor is that the accused forced the victim to convert to Islam before marriage. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. The relationship in such cases is mostly consensual and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. In such cases, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Niqah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. In this case, the victim woman herself filed a complaint with the police saying that she was forced to convert to Islam and then the perpetrator along with his relatives raped her repeatedly. Since the victim woman herself spoke about her conversion to Islam and the subsequent rape perpetrated by the Muslim accused, this case is being categorised as a religiously motivated hate crime.
