Cow slaughter gang apprehended after armed confrontation with police in Shravasti

Case Summary
Two Muslim men involved in cow slaughter were arrested by the Shravasti Police near the Marwatiya canal bridge. One of the accused, Munavvar alias Ata Hussain, opened fire on the police when they attempted to apprehend him. In response, the police shot him in the leg. He was subsequently admitted to CHC Ikouna for treatment. The second accused, Chore alias Munsrif, attempted to flee but was captured after a brief chase. The police acted on a tip-off from an informant who reported that the accused had planned to slaughter another cow that had been cruelly tied to a tree near the canal. The same group had previously been involved in the brutal slaughter of a cow in a sugarcane field in Gopalpurwa, where dismembered parts of the animal were found on 23–24 June 2025. A search of the accused’s possessions led to the recovery of a country-made pistol, live and spent cartridges, knives, a wooden stand, and other tools commonly used for animal slaughter. Munavvar already had five previous cases against him, all connected to cow theft and beef trade. Chore had three prior criminal cases at Malhipur Police Station. Following the incident, police registered a new case and formed four teams to carry out arrests and gather further evidence.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor; however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorised as Undecided. If more details emerge, they will be added to the Hate Crime Database.
