Severed cow head and remains dumped in public in Karnataka’s Udupi district
Case Summary
In Brahmavar, Udupi, a severed cow head and pieces of hide were found lying in the middle of the road. A local resident, 28-year-old Pradeep, was the first to spot the beef on the road and promptly lodged a complaint with the police. Pradeep was returning home from work. As he reached near Kunjal Junction, he saw a severed head and pieces of hide lying in the middle of the road near a rickshaw stand. Upon closer inspection, it became clear that some individuals had slaughtered a cow and thrown the remains on the road. Brahmavar police registered a case under Sections 4, 5, and 12 of the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act, along with Section 303(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The police were investigating and searching for the accused.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorised as Undecided. If more details emerge, it would be added to the Hate Crime Database.
