Case Summary

In Ramchandrapur Panchkitta village in the Muradnagar upazila in Cumilla district, Bangladesh, a 21-year-old Hindu woman was raped by Fazor Ali, a prominent Muslim leader of the Bangladeshi Nationalist Party (BNP). Four of his accomplices circulated an obscene video of the incident on social media. According to news reports, the Hindu victim, a mother of two, had been living at her paternal home for approximately two weeks while her husband worked in Dubai. During this time, Fazor Ali persistently stalked her. On the day of the attack, while the victim’s family went to attend a local fair, Fazor Ali broke into the house and raped the woman at knifepoint. When the victim screamed for help, the local residents rushed to the scene and caught hold of Fazor Ali, but he managed to flee. The accomplices of Fazor shared an obscene video of the rape on social media. Following this, the victim was taken to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for a medical examination. The victim then filed a complaint at the Muradnagar police station. A case was registered under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act of 2000. The police initially arrested four accomplices of Fazor for sharing an explicit video of the victim online. The police then managed to arrest the main accused, Fazor Ali. Following this, a legal action was initiated against all five accused. This incident is one of the several incidents of the continued persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh, which has only increased manifold since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government on August 5, 2024. After her violent ouster, Bangladesh plunged into chaos as Islamist extremists have taken advantage of the political turmoil to unleash a wave of terror and violence against the Hindu community. The Islamist mobs have attacked Hindu homes, burned them to the ground, and abducted women in a horrific descent into anarchy. Several temples have been destroyed in various parts of the Islamic country in a major crackdown on Hindus. Reports have exposed how Muslim students forced around 60 Hindu teachers, professors, and government officials to resign. Exiled Bangladeshi activist Asad Noor has also revealed that the minority Hindu community is now being coerced into joining ‘Jamaat-e-Islami’. Hindu religious events have been repeatedly targeted. On 6th September, a procession carrying Lord Ganesha’s idol was attacked in Chittagong. Ahead of Durga Puja, multiple incidents of idol vandalism occurred, including attacks in Mymensingh, Pabna, Rajshahi, Kishoreganj, and Dhaka. On 29th November, a violent Muslim mob attacked three temples in Patharghata, Chittagong, immediately after Jumma Namaz. The crackdown on Hindu voices has also escalated. On 30th November, Hindu journalist Munni Saha was arrested in Dhaka. Muslim mob attacks have increased in Bangladesh, for example, on 22nd May 2025, a Muslim mob carried out arson attacks selectively on Hindu homes in Dahar Mashihati village in Abhaynagar upazila in Jessore district of Bangladesh. Even ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu and his aides have been targeted, and attempts have been made to ban ISKCON and suppress Hindu protests through sedition charges. These arbitrary actions point to a systematic pattern of persecution under Muhammad Yunus’s interim government.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been placed under the ‘Undecided’ category in the Hinduphobia Tracker, as there is currently no definitive evidence confirming a religious motivation behind the crime. That said, it is important to consider the broader context in which the incident occurred. The crime took place in Bangladesh, where the Hindu minority has historically faced systemic persecution and violent attacks by sections of the Muslim majority. This trend has intensified significantly following the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024. Since her removal, there has been a marked surge in violence against the Hindu community — including reports of rapes, forced conversions, mob lynchings, assaults, temple desecrations, and the displacement of Hindus from their ancestral properties. Given this worsening situation, it is entirely plausible that the Hindu woman in this case may have been targeted due to her religious identity. At the same time, there remains the possibility that the attack was opportunistic or personal in nature, without a direct communal motive. In the absence of conclusive evidence pointing to a religious motive, the case will remain categorised as ‘Undecided’. Should further information emerge establishing a clear link to religiously motivated hate, the case will be reclassified appropriately within the hate crime database. Ask ChatGPT
