Cows rescued from illegal smuggling near Ambala by Hindu groups

Case Summary
In Ambala, Haryana, near the Sadar police station area, 12 cows and a calf were being illegally transported to Maharashtra when the smugglers’ vehicle was intercepted by members of Hindu organisations. Mohit Ahluwalia, the district co-minister of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, stated that the smugglers had tampered with the paperwork to transport the animals illegally from Punjab to Maharashtra. Upon receiving information, members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal apprehended the vehicle at the Shambhu border. Three of the cows had identification tags. When the driver’s documents were checked, they were found to be fake. The police were informed and brought the vehicle to the Sadar police station, where an investigation was initiated. After a medical examination, the animals were sent to a gaushala. The police are continuing further action in the matter.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are illegally smuggled for slaughtering by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor; however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorised as Undecided. If more details emerge, it will be added to the Hate Crime Database.
