Case Summary

In Roorkee, Uttarakhand, a 19-year-old Dalit Hindu girl named Nidhi Paswan was murdered by a Muslim youth named Haider Ali and two of his Muslim friends. According to the reports, the main accused, Haider Ali, had been stalking Nidhi for several months. After returning from Dubai, he persistently followed her, harassed her daily, and pressured her to marry him. He claimed to love her, while Nidhi had no feelings towards him and thus ignored him. Thus, he got angered by Nidhi's rejection and planned to murder her. On the afternoon of the incident, Haider arrived at her house on a motorcycle accompanied by two of his Muslim friends, Aaris and Sarif. He entered the house while his accomplices waited outside. Once inside the house, he assaulted Nidhi and then brutally slit her throat using a paper cutter. Her screams attracted the attention of a neighbour, Ram Avtar Sharma, who had just returned home. Sensing something was wrong, he raised an alarm. Locals quickly gathered, and Haider was caught red-handed while his accomplices managed to flee. Haider was handed over to the police, and the murder weapon was recovered from the scene; however, they were also arrested. As of the date of the writing of this report, all the accused were found guilty by the court. Haider Ali was given the death sentence while his two accomplices were given life imprisonment.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the 'Undecided' database due to the absence of concrete evidence suggesting a religious motive behind the crime or that the victim was targeted based on her religious identity. While the incident appears to align with a broader pattern in which Hindu women have been targeted by Muslim men for nefarious purposes, including religious conversion, there is currently no clear proof indicating such a motive in this case. As such, it would be inappropriate to categorise this as a Hindu hate crime at this stage. As of now, the primary motive appears to stem from personal betrayal and emotional instability—a crime of passion rather than one driven by ideological or religious intent. Since no victim testimony was presented, the girl was an adult, and the court concluded that no religious motive was involved, we are including this in the 'Undecided' category, though it is important to note the precedence of similar incidents that have later revealed religious undertones. Should further information come to light establishing a religious motive behind the crime, the case will be re-evaluated and may be reclassified accordingly.
