Case Summary

In Nagola, Ajmer, a Hindu woman and her father were brutally attacked by a group of Muslims following a minor verbal altercation over the disposal of garbage. The group assaulted them brutally, resulting in severe injuries and heightening tensions in the area. Anjali, a resident of Nagola, was cleaning the drain outside her house when a dispute arose with her Muslim neighbours regarding the dumping of garbage in the drain. The disagreement quickly escalated, as the Muslim group attacked Anjali and her father, Mahavir Mali, inflicting serious injuries on both. After receiving first aid at Bhinay Hospital, Anjali was referred to Ajmer for further treatment. News of the incident angered residents of the town and nearby villages, leading to the closure of businesses and the start of protests. This heightened religious tension in the area. Administrative and police officials arrived at the scene to manage the situation and pacify the protestors. Deputy Superintendent of Police Harshit Sharma confirmed that a case had been registered based on the victim’s complaint, an investigation was underway, and the accused had been taken into custody and were being interrogated. Local residents also said that members of the Muslim community had occupied a significant amount of land illegally in the surrounding area and called on the police to take action on this matter.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, a Hindu woman and her father were brutally assaulted by a group of Muslim youths in Ajmer, Rajasthan. The immediate trigger for the attack was a dispute over the dumping of rubbish; however, the sheer disproportionate violence inflicted, using rods and sticks to physically assault the victims, raises serious suspicion that communal bias may have influenced the attackers’ actions. There is a documented pattern in India whereby ordinary altercations involving Hindus and Muslims can escalate into targeted violence against Hindus. In many such instances, these seemingly “routine” disputes turn violent only when one party belongs to a group viewed with hostility, suggesting that the altercation becomes an excuse to inflict violence rooted in deeper communal hatred. However, all this remains speculative, as there is no conclusive evidence of religious motivation behind the attack. Nor do the victims claim that the crime was religiously motivated. Therefore, due to a lack of evidence of religious motivation, this case is being added to the ‘Undecided’ database. If further evidence emerges indicating that the crime was religiously motivated, then it will be re-categorised under the hate crime database.
