Muslim youth deceives Hindu girl by posing as a Hindu, rapes and extorts money from her, threatens to leak her private videos
Case Summary
On May 18, Kotwali Police arrested Mohammed Ikhlash for raping and blackmailing a woman. As per reports, Ikhlash posed as Manoj and told her that he was studying at GD Goenka University, Gurugram. During their relationship, Ikhlash visited Dehradun multiple times and established a physical relationship. He promised her that he would marry her as soon as he completed his college. During that period, Ikhlash started asking for money from the victim, which she sent to him via online transfer. In September 2020, the victim got suspicious and visited him to discover the reality. He took her to a hotel and showed her his ID on which Ikhlash’s real name was imprinted. Ikhlash used her sexual videos to blackmail her, saying he would publish them online. The victim said in her complaint that Ikhlash took around Rs 5 lakh from her. On May 17, the woman approached Kotwali police station and filed a complaint against Ikhlash.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, a non-Hindu man concealed his religious identity and pretended to be a Hindu to lure a Hindu woman. Since the religious motive of the crime is evident from the fact that the man pretended to be a Hindu to trap a Hindu woman, this case has been documented as a hate crime.
