Hindu girl commits suicide in Sachendi, Kanpur after one Md Shamshad threatens her to do Nikah with him

Case Summary
A 20-year-old Hindu girl identified as Manorama Devi was about to get married in Sachendi. Her pre-marriage Godh Bharai ceremony had taken place on March 31, 2023. On the afternoon of April 4, Shamshad, who had probably been stalking the girl for long, entered the girl's house along with his friends and threatened to abduct and murder her if she got married to someone else. He threatened that the girl would have to do Nikah with only him. Frightened by the threat, the girl committed suicide by hanging herself the same day. The Kanpur Police shared a byte by ACP Nishank Sharma, where he says that the accused Shamshad is a ‘nabalig’ i.e. minor.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
When Hindu women are in a relationship with a non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces pressure/threats/violence to convert and change her religious identity by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressurizing the Hindu woman to convert. In some of these cases, unable to bear the pressure/threat/violence being mounted by the non-Hindu partner to convert, the Hindu woman commits suicide. In such cases, often, threats are also given to the family members of the Hindu woman. Since such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim, leading to the woman committing suicide, these cases are categorized as a hate crime.
