Muslim man pretends to be Hindu to befriend Hindu girl, rapes and forces her to convert to Islam

Case Summary
In Madhya Pradesh’s Indore, an auto dealer named Ashraf Mansoori posed as a Hindu man named Ashu to trap a 23-year-old Hindu girl into a relationship. The Pipliya Kuma resident became friends with the perpetrator from Ashraf Mansuri Bijalpur on the Hello app. He started chatting with her in the years 2018 and 2019. He conveyed his wish to meet one month later and drove toward the Khajrana Bypass. He had intercourse with the victim in the car. She learned after around eight months that his name was Ashraf Mansoori and not Ashu. She wanted to distance herself from him, but he threatened to slit his wrist and jump from the roof. He blackmailed her to visit him and also took her to a woman’s residence in Navlakha. The offender got into an argument with the girl after which he forced her to convert to Islam. On December 8, the young woman went to his house and met his father Usmaan and brother Burkaan who mistreated her and told her to keep shut in exchange for Rs 20 to 25 thousand. They pushed her and did obscene activities to harass her. She reached the police station and registered a case with the assistance of Hindu activists the same day. Police searched his house to nab him, however, he absconded and evaded arrest.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, a non-Hindu man concealed his religious identity and pretended to be a Hindu to lure a Hindu woman. Since the religious motive of the crime is evident from the fact that the man pretended to be a Hindu to trap a Hindu woman and inflicted violence upon the victim to forced her to convert her religion, this case has been documented as a hate crime.
