Muslim youth pretends to be Hindu and tricks Hindu woman into marriage, then threatens her to convert to Islam, circumcises their children
Case Summary
From Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad city, a Hindu woman claimed that one Naved alias Ricky established a relationship with her while concealing his faith and then forced her into marriage. She met the offender, a native of Delhi’s Wazirabad, in 2015 who introduced himself as a Hindu. He used to drive an auto-rickshaw earlier and later started buying and selling cars by taking money from the victim's mother. They then tied the knot on July 10, 2015 and had two children. Eventually, she learned that her husband was in fact a Muslim named Naved. When she protested, the accused started assaulting the victim along with his brother, Javed and mother, Gulnaz with the objective of extracting a dowry. Naved called a cleric, who was his friend, and pressurised the victim into becoming a Muslim. He gave her the name Nazia and started calling her by the same. Naved even issued death threats if she refused to convert to Islam. Naved also forcefully assigned their minor children Muslim names and had them circumcised. She managed to free one of them from him while the other continued to stay with the accused’s family. The complainant started staying at her parents’ home in Ghaziabad. Reportedly, on November 2, Naved along with some of his associates, came to their house and threatened her. He tried to cut her mother’s throat too. On November 19, Naved once again visited his spouse and assaulted her. Neighbours gathered after hearing the screams and caught Naved, after which he was handed over to the authorities. Action was taken against the offender as well as his mother, brother and two other unknown persons in the case. According to reports, Naved had previously married a Hindu girl who hailed from the Bhajanpura area in Delhi. Naved converted her to Islam, named her Tamanna and later divorced her.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. What gives this case a distinct religious angle is that the Muslim perpetrator actively hid his religion and pretended to be a Hindu to ensnare the Hindu woman. He married her before revealing his real identity to the victim. He then started inflicting torture on her and her family members. The accused also circumcised the children, with a motive to convert them to Islam. Since the religious motive of the crime is evident from these facts, this case has been documented as a hate crime.
