Muslim youth forcibly converts Hindu woman to Islam and marries her, beats her when she refuses to sleep with others, smashes Hindu idol and forces her to eat beef
Case Summary
A Muslim youth named Firoz trapped a Hindu young woman Janki in Bhuj city and married her after forcibly converting her to Islam. After the marriage, Firoz asked the girl to have a physical relationship with other people. When Janki refused, Firoz brutally beat her up with an iron rod, leaving wounds and bruises all over her body. The victim said, "He wants to trap me in a dirty business. I am trapped in this. I wish no sisters fall into the trap." A video circulating on social platform X shows the victim lying down with dark bruising on her back, accompanied by areas where the skin appears to be torn. The victim had been facing this problem for the last four years. She had lodged a complaint against Firoz for domestic abuse but had to withdraw it as Firoz threatened to kill her and her 14-year-old son. The victim revealed that she was married to a Hindu man previously. After marriage, she had a son, but due to differences with her husband, she returned to her maternal home. Later Firoz trapped her in love and both of them got married. He took the victim to a Maulvi and their Nikah was conducted. Her son refused to live with the couple as he was petrified of Firoz. Initially, the victim used to do puja at home. Firoz threw away the idol of Mataji and her temple. He forced her to offer Namaz, and eat and cook beef and other meat.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
Two distinct elements in this particular case demonstrate that the Muslim perpetrator committed the crime while harbouring a bias against the Hindu faith. Firstly, the Muslim perpetrator forced the Hindu victim to convert to Islam and for that he compelled her to follow Islamic practices, like eating beef and offering Namaz, against her will. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. The relationship in such cases is mostly consensual and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. In such cases, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The second component in this case which makes it worthy of being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime is that the Muslim perpetrator desecrated idols of Hindu deities belonging to the victim. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces insult and desecration of her faith (Hinduism) and its symbol because of the inherent disregard for polytheism of the non-Hindu partner. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts desecrating the religious symbols of the Hindu partner out of spite for her faith. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes.
