Muslim youth, an IT engineer from Bengaluru, in a relationship with Hindu woman pressurises her to convert to Islam when she presses for marriage

Case Summary
Mogil Ashraf Baig of Kashmir, 32, who is an IT engineer in Bengaluru, was arrested after charges of rape and forced religious conversion were levelled by his software engineer colleague. The FIR was registered after the Hindu girl approached the Bellandur police on September 8, 2023, through X (formerly Twitter) and sought help. The two became friends on Facebook and got into a relationship. Due to pressure from Ashraf, the victim established a live-in relationship with him. The accused had unnatural sexual relations with her during this time. The offender extracted money from the victim and when she told him to return the amount, she was threatened with harm. He gained her trust, promised to marry her and continued to demand money. The woman further alleged that when she asked for marriage, Ashraf started pressuring her to convert to Islam.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The one component in this case which makes it worthy of being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime is that the Muslim perpetrator pressurised the Hindu victim to convert to Islam when she asked him to marry her. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. The relationship in such cases is mostly consensual and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. In such cases, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing.
