Married Muslim brainwashes live-in Hindu partner to convert to Islam, woman commits suicide
Case Summary
The Ghaziabad police in Uttar Pradesh recovered a suicide note from the residence of Pinki Gupta. The 26-year-old Hindu woman, who was in a live-in relationship with a man named Shakib Khan, died of suicide at her residence in on August 31, 2023. Her body was found hanging after which her family members accused her live-in partner Shakib of the crime. The deceased wrote in the suicide note that she was so deeply in love with Shakib that she was even willing to convert to Islam for him, a choice she later regretted. She recounted the accounts of deceit and betrayal she faced from him throughout the course of their four-year relationship. The note mentioned “I am deeply ashamed of myself...I even contemplated changing my religion, embracing everything about you, just to make you mine. However, you still did not grasp my feelings. I can no longer bear this...Bye, Shakib.” Pinki Gupta worked as a receptionist at a gym and had been in a four-year relationship with Shakib Khan, who was a trainer there. Pinki exerted pressure on Shakib to marry her, but he consistently declined her requests. She later discovered that Shakib had misled her about his marital status, as he was already married to someone else. Allegedly, injury marks were also found on her head. Her boyfriend and his family members were charged with murder by the victim's family. Shakib and his father Mustafa Khan were booked under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, there is one distinct component which proves that the offence was committed coupled with a bias. The sub-category under which this case qualifies is 'suicide for being forced to or pressured to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with a non-Hindu man, there are cases where the woman faces pressure/threats/violence to convert and change her religious identity by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressuring the Hindu woman to convert. In some of these cases, unable to bear the pressure/threat/violence being mounted by the non-Hindu partner to convert, the Hindu woman commits suicide. In such cases, often, threats are also given to the family members of the Hindu woman. Since such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim, leading to the woman committing suicide, these cases are categorized as hate crimes. In this case, the woman admits that she was willing to convert to Islam because she was in love with the perpetrator. It is, therefore, evidence that the perpetrator who hid his marital status and evidently drove the woman to suicide was brainwashing and/or pressuring her to convert her religion, a demand she was willing to accept because of her affection for the perpetrator. She mentions that she regretted her decision, making it evident that the demand to convert was either made under false pretexes or brainwashing. Since this case meets one of the components of religiously motivated hate crimes against Hindu women, which is that the woman commits suicide after being forced or pressured to convert, this case has been documented here.
