Married Muslim man of Alwar poses as Rohit to lure Hindu woman, rapes, blackmails her with her intimate pictures, threatens to kill her

Case Summary
A 24-year-old Hindu woman in the Alwar district of Rajasthan filed a case at Sadar police station alleging that a Muslim man named Junaid Khan lured her into marrying him by posing as a Hindu named Rohit Pradhan. The two started chatting over Instagram. The accused often asked for money from the victim claiming that the financial condition of his family was not good. He took a total of Rs 8 lakh in cash or through online payments. The victim alleged that when she went to Alwar on April 11, 2022, the accused Junaid intoxicated her at a hotel and raped her multiple times. He also took obscene pictures and videos and blackmailed her with them. He also met her in Jodhur on July 3, 2023 where he raped her again. When she talked about getting married, Junaid took her to a rented accommodation in Alwar and raped her again on July 12. In a photo, it was seen that Junaid applied vermilion on the victim's forehead and married her. Although the victim was in touch with the accused's family, he did not keep her with him. However, he used to meet her at various places and have physical relations with her despite her objections. When the victim went to Kakrali village, it was revealed to her that Rohit was actually Junaid. Moreover, she learnt that he was already married to another woman. On July 13th, accused Junaid Khan barged into the victim’s house at around 8 pm with a knife, threatening to kill her if she talked about marriage or asked for the money she gave to him. He also threatened to leak her objectionable photos and videos. Police are investigating the matter and the search is on to arrest accused Junaid Khan.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, a Muslim man concealed his religious identity and pretended to be a Hindu to lure a Hindu woman. The accused married the Hindu woman as per Hindu traditions to deceive her. Since the religious motive of the crime is evident from the fact that the man pretended to be a Hindu to trap a Hindu woman, this case has been documented as a hate crime.
