Cow slaughter attempt in Amroha stopped; key accused arrested after encounter

Case Summary
In Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, a history-sheeter named Qasim Miyan, also known as “Pepsi”, who was plotting cow slaughter, was arrested following an encounter in a joint operation by the Didoli Police, the SOG (Special Operations Group), and the surveillance team. The operation took place on the night near Mirpur village, after police received intelligence indicating preparations for cow slaughter at an abandoned brick kiln. During the operation, the criminals opened fire on the police, injuring Head Constable Hidayat Ali, who sustained a gunshot wound. In retaliatory fire, Qasim alias Pepsi was shot in the leg and apprehended on the spot. However, his associate Munawwar managed to escape under the cover of darkness. Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar Anand stated that a country-made pistol, cartridges, tools used for cow slaughter, and a motorbike were recovered from the scene. Qasim alias Pepsi is wanted in dozens of serious cases in Amroha and Moradabad, including robbery, theft, cow slaughter, and offences under the Gangsters Act. As soon as police received reports of suspicious activity at the kiln, Didoli SHO Harish Vardhan Singh, SOG in-charge Vikas Sahrawat, and surveillance head Bijendra Malik reached the location with their teams. Head Constable Hidayat Ali, Constables Ajit Kumar and Deepak, led by Inspectors Kamal Singh and Phool Singh, surrounded the site. When the criminals realised they were cornered, they opened indiscriminate fire on the police. Head Constable Hidayat Ali was shot in the arm, and a bullet lodged in Constable Deepak’s bulletproof jacket. In self-defence, the police returned fire, injuring Qasim alias Pepsi, who was then apprehended. Munawwar fled the scene and is currently being sought. According to police, Qasim alias Pepsi is implicated in around 20 serious cases and has long been involved in cow slaughter and organised criminal activities. A case was registered in connection with the encounter, and proceedings were underway to send him to jail. Special teams were formed to track down and arrest Munawwar.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorised as Undecided. If more details emerge, it would be added to the Hate Crime Database.
