Case Summary

In Aligarh, a Muslim attempted to lure a minor Hindu girl and proposed marriage during the train journey. When the girl refused, he tried to pressure her by threatening to jump in front of the train, and also attempted to harass her. The Hindu girl is originally from Odisha. She was travelling with her mentally challenged mother from Bahjoi to Aligarh in the Aligarh–Bareilly passenger train. From Aligarh, she was scheduled to board the Neelanchal Express to return to Odisha. During the journey, a Muslim youth from Delhi began talking to the girl. Taking advantage of her mother’s mental condition, he engaged the girl in conversation and proposed marriage. When she refused, he threatened to end his life by jumping in front of the train and tried to harass her. Another young man travelling in the same coach informed Hindu activists in Aligarh via phone. A Hindu activist leader then informed the police. When the train reached Aligarh Junction, several activists gathered and demanded action from the Government Railway Police (GRP). The GRP personnel brought the Muslim youth, the girl, and her mother to the GRP station. The girl told the GRP that the Muslim youth was threatening her because she refused his marriage proposal. GRP Inspector Sandeep Tomar confirmed that the girl is a minor. However, she declined to file a complaint or give a written statement. As a result, the Muslim youth was also released due to the absence of a formal complaint.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, a minor Hindu girl was lured and harassed by a Muslim man for marriage. This could potentially be a crime motivated by religious profiling, as it has been observed that in many cases, Muslim perpetrators target Hindu girls due to inherent animosity towards Hindus, particularly Hindu women. It could also be argued that for a Muslim perpetrator, a Muslim girl would likely be more accessible than a Hindu girl. The fact that the perpetrator specifically targeted the Hindu girl suggests religious profiling of the victim. However, it is equally possible that the crime was one of opportunity, where the Hindu girl was simply accessible to the Muslim perpetrator. Nevertheless, this remains speculative, as the news report provides no clear indication of religious motivations. Moreover, the victim has made any statements suggesting that the crime was religiously motivated. For this reason, the case has been added to the 'Undecided' database. If further information emerges that hints towards a religiously motivated crime, then it would be reclassified and included under the Hate Crime database.
