Villagers apprehend young man for cow slaughter and theft; police claim cow was hit by train, protests erupted
Case Summary
In the Dugdha village under the Gamharia police station area, protests erupted after villagers caught a young man involved in cow slaughter. In the Dugdha village and its surrounding villages, for the past several days, multiple incidents of cow theft have been reported. Villagers stated that the stolen animals were being slaughtered and transported elsewhere. Despite informing the police, the villagers stated that no concrete action was taken. Taking matters into their own hands, angry villagers kept vigil and raided the closed Vallabh Steel Company premises located near Jhurkhuli gate, which was suspected to be the site of such illegal activities. On reaching the location, the villagers reported that several individuals ran away, but one youth was caught and was handed over to the police. According to the police, the cow died allegedly due to being hit by a train, and some boys subsequently took it away. However, this explanation did not pacify the villagers, after which they started protesting. It has been reported that the leader of the cow slaughter gang is a resident of Jhurkhuli village.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorised as Undecided. If more details emerge, it would be added to the Hate Crime Database.
