Minor Hindu girl lured and sexually exploited; blackmailed into conversion and nikah, by a Muslim man pretending to be Hindu

Case Summary
In Agra, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu girl was deceived, blackmailed and sexually exploited with being pressure to convert by a Muslim man named Sarik, who pretended to be Hindu. A Hindu girl filed a complaint against Sarik, saying he befriended her under a false Hindu identity of Deepak Rai Singhani. The victim stated that she met Sarik in 2010 while she studying in Class 11 at a coaching centre in New Agra. They became friends, with Sarik still posing as Deepak, and even started going to temples together. However, upon discovering his real identity as Sarik as a Muslim, a resident of Indrapuri, she ended the relationship. According to the victim, she moved to Delhi in 2015 for coaching, where Sarik followed her and further harassed her, forcing her to leave the hostel. She moved to a rented apartment where Sarik forcefully entered and raped her by threatening her and also recorded the act. Sarik continued to blackmail her using the video and subjected her to prolonged sexual exploitation. Furthermore, Sarik also started pressuring her to convert to Islam and marry him. When she opposed his demands, he physically assaulted her and stole her jewellery. When she went to retrieve the stolen jewellery, Sarik, along with his parents and relatives, Kallu, Nagina, and Nazim, beat her up. Sarik also threatened to make the obscene video public and would throw acid at her face if she refused to marry him. As of the date of writing this report, a complaint was registered by the police and the investigation was ongoing.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of: - Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within it, the first sub-category selected is: - Man pretends to be Hindu, with the tertiary category being: - Name changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The second sub-category relevant here is: - Forced conversion before marriage. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both the situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing The third sub-category selected here is: - Rape for refusal to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces pressure/threats/violence to convert and change her religious identity by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressuring the Hindu woman to convert. In some of these cases, the association could be non-consensual as well or, the religious identity of the non-Muslim man could be previously unknown to the Hindu victim. As the case may be, in such cases, the non-Hindu man forces himself sexually on the Hindu woman when she refuses his advances and pressures to convert her religion. The rape of the woman is often seen as either a punishment for the woman refusing to convert. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The fourth sub-category selected here is: - Blackmailed to convert When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman is blackmailed to convert her religion, owing to her religious identity of being a Hindu. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim, however, there could be cases where the relationship is not consensual and the non-Hindu man starts blackmailing a Hindu woman to convert her religion. In these cases, it is often seen that the Hindu woman is blackmailed with intimate photos and/or videos, threats of harm to her or her family, threats of violence etc. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The second primary category selected here is: - Predatory proselytisation. Within it, the sub-category selected is: - Harassment, threats, coercion for conversion Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats, in this case, find their root on discriminatory grounds which has the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion, forceful circumcision etc. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment to ensure the Hindu victim abandons his/her professed religion and adopts the religion of the perpetrator. Such cases where Hindu victims are harassed to convert to the perpetrator’s religion are rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. The religious motive of the crime is evident from the fact that the Muslim perpetrator hid his true identity to trap the Hindu victim. The accused even went as far as visiting the temple with the victim to convince her that he shared the same faith as her. This itself is a clear manifestation of bias and malicious intent towards the victim's religion. By concealing his true identity, he exploited her trust, targeting her under false pretences. This indicates a premeditated intent to manipulate her based on her religious background. In cases like these, the tactic of adopting a false Hindu identity to manipulate and "ensnare" a Hindu individual is not just an act of personal betrayal but can also be interpreted as an expression of disdain or disregard for Hinduism and its customs that reflects a deeper animosity towards Hindus and their beliefs. When his identity was discovered, the girl broke off the relationship. However, Sarik continued to harass and stalk her, eventually blackmailing and sexually exploiting her over a prolonged period. He also pressured her to convert to Islam and marry him despite her repeated objections. Sarik’s deliberate concealment of his religious identity and sustained pattern of sexual and physical abuse reflect that he was never interested in pursuing a genuine relationship; instead, his real goal was targeting a Hindu girl for religious conversion and sexual exploitation. The use of sexual violence, intimidation, and blackmail as tools for forced conversion highlights a systematic and targeted violation of the victim’s dignity and freedom of belief. This case, therefore, perfectly fits within the category of religiously motivated hate crimes, warranting inclusion in the tracker. Disclaimer: Media reports state that the victim’s ordeal began when she met the accused in 2010, though no exact date or month is provided. To document this case, we have used an indicative date—January 1, 2010—as a placeholder to represent the beginning of her suffering. While media coverage of the incident emerged on May 23, 2025, the Hinduphobia Tracker records the incident based on when the victim’s ordeal began, not when it was reported.
